1 Then I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold, the tears of those who were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.
1 Vi ainda todas as opressões que se fazem debaixo do sol: vi as lágrimas dos que foram oprimidos, sem que ninguém os consolasse; vi a violência na mão dos opressores, sem que ninguém consolasse os oprimidos.
2 Therefore I praised the dead who have been long dead more than the living who are yet alive.
2 Pelo que tenho por mais felizes os que já morreram, mais do que os que ainda vivem;
3 Yes, better than them both is him who has not yet been, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
3 porém mais que uns e outros tenho por feliz aquele que ainda não nasceu e não viu as más obras que se fazem debaixo do sol.
4 Then I saw all the labour and achievement that is the envy of a man’s neighbour. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
4 Então, vi que todo trabalho e toda destreza em obras provêm da inveja do homem contra o seu próximo. Também isto é vaidade e correr atrás do vento.
5 The fool folds his hands together and ruins himself.
5 O tolo cruza os braços e come a própria carne, dizendo:
6 Better is a handful, with quietness, than two handfuls with labour and chasing after wind.
6 Melhor é um punhado de descanso do que ambas as mãos cheias de trabalho e correr atrás do vento.
7 Then I returned and saw vanity under the sun.
7 Então, considerei outra vaidade debaixo do sol,
8 There is one who is alone, and he has neither son nor brother. There is no end to all of his labour, neither are his eyes satisfied with wealth. "For whom then do I labour and deprive my soul of enjoyment?" This also is vanity. Yes, it is a miserable business.
8 isto é, um homem sem ninguém, não tem filho nem irmã; contudo, não cessa de trabalhar, e seus olhos não se fartam de riquezas; e não diz: Para quem trabalho eu, se nego à minha alma os bens da vida? Também isto é vaidade e enfadonho trabalho.
9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labour.
9 Melhor é serem dois do que um, porque têm melhor paga do seu trabalho.
10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.
10 Porque se caírem, um levanta o companheiro; ai, porém, do que estiver só; pois, caindo, não haverá quem o levante.
11 Again, if two lie together, then they have warmth; but how can one keep warm alone?
11 Também, se dois dormirem juntos, eles se aquentarão; mas um só como se aquentará?
12 If a man prevails against one who is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
12 Se alguém quiser prevalecer contra um, os dois lhe resistirão; o cordão de três dobras não se rebenta com facilidade.
13 Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who doesn’t know how to receive admonition any more.
13 Melhor é o jovem pobre e sábio do que o rei velho e insensato, que já não se deixa admoestar,
14 For out of prison he came out to be king; yes, even in his kingdom he was born poor.
14 ainda que aquele saia do cárcere para reinar ou nasça pobre no reino deste.
15 I saw all the living who walk under the sun, that they were with the youth, the other, who succeeded him.
15 Vi todos os viventes que andam debaixo do sol com o jovem sucessor, que ficará em lugar do rei.
16 There was no end of all the people, even of all them over whom he was—yet those who come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a chasing after wind.
16 Era sem conta todo o povo que ele dominava; tampouco os que virão depois se hão de regozijar nele. Na verdade, que também isto é vaidade e correr atrás do vento.
