1 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is heavy on men:
1 Há um mal que tenho visto debaixo do sol e que mui frequente é entre os homens:
2 a man to whom God gives riches, wealth, and honour, so that he lacks nothing for his soul of all that he desires, yet God gives him no power to eat of it, but an alien eats it. This is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
2 um homem a quem Deus deu riquezas, fazenda e honra, e nada lhe falta de tudo quanto a sua alma deseja, mas Deus não lhe dá poder para daí comer; antes, o estranho lho come; também isso é vaidade e má enfermidade.
3 If a man fathers a hundred children, and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul is not filled with good, and moreover he has no burial, I say that a stillborn child is better than he;
3 Se o homem gerar cem filhos e viver muitos anos, e os dias dos seus anos forem muitos, e se a sua alma se não fartar do bem, e além disso não tiver um enterro, digo que um aborto é melhor do que ele,
4 for it comes in vanity, and departs in darkness, and its name is covered with darkness.
4 porquanto debalde veio e em trevas se vai, e de trevas se cobre o seu nome.
5 Moreover it has not seen the sun nor known it. This has rest rather than the other.
5 E, ainda que nunca viu o sol, nem o conheceu, mais descanso tem do que o tal.
6 Yes, though he live a thousand years twice told, and yet fails to enjoy good, don’t all go to one place?
6 E certamente, ainda que vivesse duas vezes mil anos, mas não gozasse o bem, não vão todos para um mesmo lugar?
7 All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
7 Todo trabalho do homem é para a sua boca, e, contudo, nunca se satisfaz a sua cobiça.
8 For what advantage has the wise more than the fool? What has the poor man, that knows how to walk before the living?
8 Porque, que mais tem o sábio do que o tolo? E que mais tem o pobre que sabe andar perante os vivos?
9 Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.
9 Melhor é a vista dos olhos do que o vaguear da cobiça; também isso é vaidade e aflição de espírito.
10 Whatever has been, its name was given long ago; and it is known what man is; neither can he contend with him who is mightier than he.
10 Seja qualquer o que for, já o seu nome foi nomeado, e sabe-se que é homem e que não pode contender com o que é mais forte do que ele.
11 For there are many words that create vanity. What does that profit man?
11 Sendo certo que há muitas coisas que aumentam a vaidade, que mais tem o homem de melhor?
12 For who knows what is good for man in life, all the days of his vain life which he spends like a shadow? For who can tell a man what will be after him under the sun?
12 Porque, quem sabe o que é bom nesta vida para o homem, por todos os dias da sua vaidade, os quais gasta como sombra? Porque, quem declarará ao homem o que será depois dele debaixo do sol?
