1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven:
1 Tudo tem o seu tempo determinado, e há tempo para todo propósito debaixo do céu:
2 a time to be born,
2 há tempo de nascer e tempo de morrer; tempo de plantar e tempo de arrancar o que se plantou;
3 a time to kill,
3 tempo de matar e tempo de curar; tempo de derribar e tempo de edificar;
4 a time to weep,
4 tempo de chorar e tempo de rir; tempo de prantear e tempo de saltar de alegria;
5 a time to cast away stones,
5 tempo de espalhar pedras e tempo de ajuntar pedras; tempo de abraçar e tempo de afastar-se de abraçar;
6 a time to seek,
6 tempo de buscar e tempo de perder; tempo de guardar e tempo de deitar fora;
7 a time to tear,
7 tempo de rasgar e tempo de coser; tempo de estar calado e tempo de falar;
8 a time to love,
8 tempo de amar e tempo de aborrecer; tempo de guerra e tempo de paz.
9 What profit has he who works in that in which he labours?
9 Que proveito tem o trabalhador naquilo com que se afadiga?
10 I have seen the burden which God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.
10 Vi o trabalho que Deus impôs aos filhos dos homens, para com ele os afligir.
11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in their hearts, yet so that man can’t find out the work that God has done from the beginning even to the end.
11 Tudo fez Deus formoso no seu devido tempo; também pôs a eternidade no coração do homem, sem que este possa descobrir as obras que Deus fez desde o princípio até ao fim.
12 I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice, and to do good as long as they live.
12 Sei que nada há melhor para o homem do que regozijar-se e levar vida regalada;
13 Also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy good in all his labour, is the gift of God.
13 e também que é dom de Deus que possa o homem comer, beber e desfrutar o bem de todo o seu trabalho.
14 I know that whatever God does, it shall be forever. Nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it; and God has done it, that men should fear before him.
14 Sei que tudo quanto Deus faz durará eternamente; nada se lhe pode acrescentar e nada lhe tirar; e isto faz Deus para que os homens temam diante dele.
15 That which is has been long ago, and that which is to be has been long ago. God seeks again that which is passed away.
15 O que é já foi, e o que há de ser também já foi; Deus fará renovar-se o que se passou.
16 Moreover I saw under the sun, in the place of justice, that wickedness was there; and in the place of righteousness, that wickedness was there.
16 Vi ainda debaixo do sol que no lugar do juízo reinava a maldade e no lugar da justiça, maldade ainda.
17 I said in my heart, "God will judge the righteous and the wicked; for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work."
17 Então, disse comigo: Deus julgará o justo e o perverso; pois há tempo para todo propósito e para toda obra.
18 I said in my heart, "As for the sons of men, God tests them, so that they may see that they themselves are like animals.
18 Disse ainda comigo: é por causa dos filhos dos homens, para que Deus os prove, e eles vejam que são em si mesmos como os animais.
19 For that which happens to the sons of men happens to animals. Even one thing happens to them. As the one dies, so the other dies. Yes, they have all one breath; and man has no advantage over the animals, for all is vanity.
19 Porque o que sucede aos filhos dos homens sucede aos animais; o mesmo lhes sucede: como morre um, assim morre o outro, todos têm o mesmo fôlego de vida, e nenhuma vantagem tem o homem sobre os animais; porque tudo é vaidade.
20 All go to one place. All are from the dust, and all turn to dust again.
20 Todos vão para o mesmo lugar; todos procedem do pó e ao pó tornarão.
21 Who knows the spirit of man, whether it goes upward, and the spirit of the animal, whether it goes downward to the earth?"
21 Quem sabe se o fôlego de vida dos filhos dos homens se dirige para cima e o dos animais para baixo, para a terra?
22 Therefore I saw that there is nothing better than that a man should rejoice in his works, for that is his portion; for who can bring him to see what will be after him?
22 Pelo que vi não haver coisa melhor do que alegrar-se o homem nas suas obras, porque essa é a sua recompensa; quem o fará voltar para ver o que será depois dele?
