1 While Israel remained at Shittim, the people indulged in sexual immorality with the Moabite women.
1 E Israel habitou em Sitim, e o povo começou a se prostituir com as filhas de Moabe.
2 The Moabites invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods. The people ate and bowed down to their gods.
2 E estas convidaram o povo para os sacrifícios de seus deuses, e o povo comeu e se inclinou diante de seus deuses.
3 So Israel joined itself to Baal of Peor. Jehovah was angry against Israel.
3 E Israel se uniu a Baal-Peor, e a ira do SENHOR se acendeu contra Israel.
4 Jehovah said to Moses: »Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before Jehovah so that the fierce anger of Jehovah may turn away from Israel.«
4 E o SENHOR disse a Moisés: Toma todos os cabeças do povo, e enforca-os perante o SENHOR, diante do sol, para que a ira do SENHOR possa se afastar de Israel.
5 Moses said to the judges of Israel: »Each of you put to death those men who have joined in worshiping Baal of Peor.«
5 E Moisés disse aos juízes de Israel: Que cada um mate os seus homens que se juntaram a Baal-Peor.
6 One of the Israelite men brought a Midianite woman to his brothers. He did this right in front of Moses and the entire congregation of Israel while they were crying at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
6 E eis que veio um dos filhos de Israel, e trouxe a seus irmãos uma midianita, perante os olhos de Moisés e de toda a congregação dos filhos de Israel, que estava chorando diante da porta do tabernáculo da congregação.
7 Phinehas, son of Eleazar and grandson of the priest Aaron, saw this. He left the assembly and grabbed a spear in his hand.
7 E quando Fineias, filho de Eleazar, filho de Arão, o sacerdote, viu isto, levantou-se do meio da congregação, e tomou uma lança na sua mão.
8 He went into the tent after the Israelite man. He drove the spear through the man and into the woman’s body. Because of this, the plague that the Israelites were experiencing stopped.
8 E foi em busca do homem israelita até a tenda, e furou a ambos pelo seu ventre, ao homem de Israel, e à mulher. Então a praga cessou sobre os filhos de Israel.
9 Twenty-four thousand people died from that plague.
9 E os que morreram daquela praga foram vinte e quatro mil.
10 Jehovah continued speaking to Moses:
10 E o SENHOR falou a Moisés, dizendo:
11 Jehovah said to Moses: »Phinehas, son of Eleazar and grandson of the priest Aaron, turned my fury away from the Israelites. Since he stood up for me, I did not have to stand up for myself and destroy them.
11 Fineias, filho de Eleazar, filho de Arão, o sacerdote, desviou a minha ira de sobre os filhos de Israel, enquanto ele foi zeloso por mim, entre eles, de modo que, no meu zelo, não consumi os filhos de Israel.
12 »Tell Phinehas that I now make a promise of peace to him.
12 Portanto, dize: Eis que lhe dou o meu pacto de paz.
13 »My promise is that he and his descendants will be priests for a very long time because he stood up for his God. He made peace with Jehovah for the Israelites.«
13 E ele, e a sua semente depois dele, terão o pacto de um sacerdócio perpétuo; porque ele foi zeloso pelo seu Deus, e fez expiação pelos filhos de Israel.
14 The name of the Israelite man who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri, son of Salu. Salu was the leader of a family from Simeon.
14 E o nome do israelita morto, que foi morto com a midianita, era Zinri, filho de Salu, chefe de uma importante casa dos simeonitas.
15 The name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi, daughter of Zur. Zur was the head of a family from the Midianite tribes.
15 E o nome da mulher midianita que foi morta era Cosbi, filha de Zur, ele era cabeça de um povo, e da casa paterna de Midiã.
16 Jehovah said to Moses:
16 E o SENHOR disse a Moisés, dizendo:
17 »Treat the Midianites as your enemies, and kill them!
17 Atacai os midianitas e os ferireis.
18 »This is because they treated you as enemies. They plotted to trick you in the incident that took place at Peor. They used their sister Cozbi, daughter of a Midianite leader, who was killed on the day of the plague caused by the incident at Peor.«
18 Porque eles vos irritaram com os seus enganos, com que vos enganaram no assunto de Peor e no assunto de Cosbi, filha de um príncipe de Midiã, irmã deles, que foi morta no dia da praga por causa de Peor.
