1 Surely, friends, you|strong="G3754" know|strong="G1097" (for|strong="G1063" I|strong="G1063" am|strong="G3551" speaking|strong="G2980" to|strong="G1909" people|strong="G3588" who|strong="G3588" know|strong="G1097" what|strong="G3588" Law|strong="G3551" means) that|strong="G3754" Law|strong="G3551" has|strong="G3748" power over|strong="G1909" a|strong="G1909" person only as|strong="G3745" long|strong="G5550" as|strong="G3745" they|strong="G3588" live|strong="G2198".
2 For|strong="G1063" example, by|strong="G2198" law|strong="G3551" a|strong="G1437" married|strong="G1135" woman|strong="G1135" is|strong="G3588" bound|strong="G1210" to|strong="G1161" her|strong="G1437" husband|strong="G5220" while|strong="G1161" he|strong="G1161" is|strong="G3588" living|strong="G2198"; but|strong="G1161", if|strong="G1437" her|strong="G1437" husband|strong="G5220" dies, she|strong="G1161" is|strong="G3588" set free from|strong="G3588" the|strong="G1161" law|strong="G3551" that|strong="G3588" bound|strong="G1210" her|strong="G1437" to|strong="G1161" him|strong="G3588".
3 If|strong="G1437", then|strong="G3767", during|strong="G1096" her|strong="G1437" husband’s lifetime|strong="G2198", she|strong="G1161" unites herself|strong="G1438" to|strong="G1096" another|strong="G2087" man|strong="G3361", she|strong="G1161" will|strong="G1510" be|strong="G1096" called|strong="G5537" an|strong="G1096" adulteress|strong="G3428"; but|strong="G1161", if|strong="G1437" her|strong="G1437" husband dies, the|strong="G1161" law|strong="G3551" has|strong="G1096" no|strong="G3361" further hold on|strong="G1161" her|strong="G1437", nor|strong="G3361", if|strong="G1437" she|strong="G1161" unites herself|strong="G1438" to|strong="G1096" another|strong="G2087" man|strong="G3361", is|strong="G1510" she|strong="G1161" an|strong="G1096" adulteress|strong="G3428".
4 And|strong="G2532" so|strong="G2443" with|strong="G1537" you|strong="G5210", my|strong="G1473" friends; as|strong="G1519" far|strong="G3588" as|strong="G1519" the|strong="G2532" Law|strong="G3551" was|strong="G1096" concerned, you|strong="G5210" underwent death|strong="G2289" in|strong="G1519" the|strong="G2532" crucified body|strong="G4983" of|strong="G1537" the|strong="G2532" Christ|strong="G5547", so|strong="G2443" that|strong="G2443" you|strong="G5210" might|strong="G2532" be|strong="G1096" united to|strong="G1519" another|strong="G2087", to|strong="G1519" him|strong="G3588" who|strong="G3588" was|strong="G1096" raised|strong="G1453" from|strong="G1537" the|strong="G2532" dead|strong="G3498", in|strong="G1519" order|strong="G2443" that|strong="G2443" our|strong="G2316" lives might|strong="G2532" bear|strong="G2592" fruit|strong="G2592" for|strong="G1519" God|strong="G2316".
5 When|strong="G3753" we|strong="G2249" were|strong="G1510" living merely earthly|strong="G4561" lives, our|strong="G1223" sinful passions|strong="G3804", aroused|strong="G3804" by|strong="G1223" the|strong="G1722" Law|strong="G3551", were|strong="G1510" active in|strong="G1722" every|strong="G1722" part|strong="G1473" of|strong="G1223" our|strong="G1223" bodies|strong="G3196", with|strong="G1722" the|strong="G1722" result|strong="G1519" that|strong="G3588" our|strong="G1223" lives bore fruit|strong="G2592" for|strong="G1063" death|strong="G2288".
6 But|strong="G1161" now|strong="G1161" we|strong="G2249" are|strong="G3588" set|strong="G2532" free|strong="G1722" from|strong="G2532" the|strong="G1722" Law|strong="G3551", because|strong="G1722" we|strong="G2249" are|strong="G3588" dead to|strong="G2532" that|strong="G3739" which|strong="G3739" once|strong="G3739" kept|strong="G3739" us|strong="G2249" under|strong="G1722" restraint; and|strong="G2532" so|strong="G2532" we|strong="G2249" serve|strong="G1398" under|strong="G1722" new, spiritual|strong="G4151" conditions, and|strong="G2532" not|strong="G3756" under|strong="G1722" old|strong="G2532", written|strong="G1121" regulations.
7 What|strong="G5101" are|strong="G3588" we|strong="G1063" to|strong="G3004" say|strong="G3004", then|strong="G3767"? That|strong="G3588" Law|strong="G3551" and|strong="G5037" sin are|strong="G3588" the|strong="G1223" same thing|strong="G5101"? Heaven forbid|strong="G1096"! On|strong="G1096" the|strong="G1223" contrary, I|strong="G1063" should|strong="G1492" not|strong="G3756" have|strong="G1096" learned|strong="G1097" what|strong="G5101" sin is|strong="G3588", had|strong="G3588" not|strong="G3756" it|strong="G1063" been|strong="G1096" for|strong="G1063" Law|strong="G3551". If|strong="G1487" the|strong="G1223" Law|strong="G3551" did|strong="G1492" not|strong="G3756" say|strong="G3004" “You|strong="G1487" must|strong="G2046" not|strong="G3756" covet|strong="G1937",” I|strong="G1063" should|strong="G1492" not|strong="G3756" know|strong="G1492" what|strong="G5101" it|strong="G1063" is|strong="G3588" to|strong="G3004" covet|strong="G1937".
8 But|strong="G1161" sin took|strong="G2983" advantage of|strong="G1223" the|strong="G1722" commandment|strong="G1785" to|strong="G1722" arouse in|strong="G1722" me|strong="G1473" every|strong="G3956" form|strong="G3956" of|strong="G1223" covetousness, for|strong="G1063" where|strong="G1722" there|strong="G1161" is|strong="G3588" no|strong="G3956" consciousness of|strong="G1223" Law|strong="G3551" sin shows|strong="G2983" no|strong="G3956" sign of|strong="G1223" life.
9 There|strong="G1161" was|strong="G3588" a|strong="G2064" time|strong="G4218" when|strong="G1161" I|strong="G1473" myself|strong="G1473", unconscious of|strong="G3551" Law|strong="G3551", was|strong="G3588" alive|strong="G2198"; but|strong="G1161" when|strong="G1161" the|strong="G1161" commandment|strong="G1785" was|strong="G3588" brought|strong="G2064" home to|strong="G2064" me|strong="G1473", sin sprang into|strong="G2064" life|strong="G2198", while|strong="G1161" I|strong="G1473" died|strong="G3588"!
10 The|strong="G2532" commandment|strong="G1785" that|strong="G3588" should|strong="G3588" have|strong="G2532" meant life|strong="G2222" I|strong="G1473" found|strong="G2147" to|strong="G1519" result|strong="G1519" in|strong="G1519" death|strong="G2288"!
11 Sin took|strong="G2983" advantage of|strong="G1223" the|strong="G2532" commandment|strong="G1785" to|strong="G2532" deceive|strong="G1818" me|strong="G1473", and|strong="G2532" used it|strong="G2532" to|strong="G2532" bring|strong="G2983" about|strong="G3588" my|strong="G1473" death.
12 And|strong="G2532" so|strong="G2532" the|strong="G2532" Law|strong="G3551" is|strong="G3588" holy, and|strong="G2532" each commandment|strong="G1785" is|strong="G3588" also|strong="G2532" holy, and|strong="G2532" just|strong="G1342", and|strong="G2532" good|strong="G3588".
13 Did|strong="G1096", then|strong="G3767", a|strong="G1096" thing, which|strong="G3588" in|strong="G2596" itself was|strong="G1096" good|strong="G1223", involve death|strong="G2288" in|strong="G2596" my|strong="G1473" case|strong="G3588"? Heaven forbid|strong="G1096"! It|strong="G1223" was|strong="G1096" sin that|strong="G2443" involved death|strong="G2288"; so|strong="G2443" that|strong="G2443", by|strong="G1223" its|strong="G1223" use|strong="G3588" of|strong="G1223" what|strong="G3588" I|strong="G1473" regarded as|strong="G2596" good|strong="G1223" to|strong="G2443" bring about|strong="G2596" my|strong="G1473" death|strong="G2288", its|strong="G1223" true|strong="G3588" nature might|strong="G1785" appear|strong="G5316"; and|strong="G3767" in|strong="G2596" this|strong="G3588" way|strong="G2596" the|strong="G1223" commandment|strong="G1785" showed how|strong="G2596" intensely sinful sin is|strong="G3588".
14 We|strong="G3754" know|strong="G1492" that|strong="G3754" the|strong="G1161" Law|strong="G3551" is|strong="G1510" spiritual|strong="G4152", but|strong="G1161" I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1510" earthly – sold|strong="G4097" into|strong="G5259" slavery to|strong="G1161" sin.
15 I|strong="G3739" do|strong="G4160" not|strong="G3756" understand|strong="G1097" my|strong="G3739" own actions. For|strong="G1063" I|strong="G3739" am|strong="G2309" so|strong="G1063" far from|strong="G3756" habitually doing|strong="G4160" what|strong="G3739" I|strong="G3739" want|strong="G2309" to|strong="G2309" do|strong="G4160", that|strong="G3739" I|strong="G3739" find|strong="G1097" myself doing|strong="G4160" the|strong="G1063" thing|strong="G3778" that|strong="G3739" I|strong="G3739" hate|strong="G3404".
16 But|strong="G1161" when|strong="G1161" I|strong="G3739" do|strong="G4160" what|strong="G3739" I|strong="G3739" want|strong="G2309" not|strong="G3756" to|strong="G2309" do|strong="G4160", I|strong="G3739" am|strong="G2309" admitting that|strong="G3754" the|strong="G1161" Law|strong="G3551" is|strong="G3588" right|strong="G2570".
17 This|strong="G3588" being|strong="G1722" so|strong="G1161", the|strong="G1722" action is|strong="G3588" no|strong="G3765" longer|strong="G3765" my|strong="G1722" own, but|strong="G1161" is|strong="G3588" done|strong="G2716" by|strong="G1722" the|strong="G1722" sin which|strong="G3588" is|strong="G3588" within|strong="G1722" me|strong="G1473".
18 I|strong="G1473" know|strong="G1492" that|strong="G3754" there|strong="G1161" is|strong="G1510" nothing|strong="G3756" good|strong="G2570" in|strong="G1722" me|strong="G1473" – I|strong="G1473" mean|strong="G2309" in|strong="G1722" my|strong="G1722" earthly|strong="G4561" nature. For|strong="G1063", although|strong="G1161" it|strong="G3754" is|strong="G1510" easy for|strong="G1063" me|strong="G1473" to|strong="G2309" want|strong="G2309" to|strong="G2309" do|strong="G1492" right|strong="G2570", to|strong="G2309" act rightly is|strong="G1510" not|strong="G3756" easy.
19 I|strong="G3739" fail|strong="G3756" to|strong="G2309" do|strong="G4160" the|strong="G1063" good|strong="G3756" thing|strong="G3778" that|strong="G3739" I|strong="G3739" want|strong="G2309" to|strong="G2309" do|strong="G4160", but|strong="G1063" the|strong="G1063" bad|strong="G2556" thing|strong="G3778" that|strong="G3739" I|strong="G3739" want|strong="G2309" not|strong="G3756" to|strong="G2309" do|strong="G4160" – that|strong="G3739" I|strong="G3739" habitually do|strong="G4160".
20 But|strong="G1161", when|strong="G1161" I|strong="G1473" do|strong="G4160" the|strong="G1722" thing|strong="G3778" that|strong="G3739" I|strong="G1473" want|strong="G2309" not|strong="G3756" to|strong="G2309" do|strong="G4160", the|strong="G1722" action is|strong="G3588" no|strong="G3756" longer|strong="G3765" my|strong="G1722" own, but|strong="G1161" is|strong="G3588" done|strong="G4160" by|strong="G1722" the|strong="G1722" sin which|strong="G3739" is|strong="G3588" within|strong="G1722" me|strong="G1473".
21 This|strong="G3588", then|strong="G3754", is|strong="G3588" the|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551" that|strong="G3754" I|strong="G1473" find|strong="G2147" – when|strong="G2147" I|strong="G1473" want|strong="G2309" to|strong="G2309" do|strong="G4160" right|strong="G2570", wrong|strong="G2556" presents itself!
22 At|strong="G2596" heart I|strong="G1063" delight|strong="G4913" in|strong="G2596" the|strong="G2596" Law|strong="G3551" of|strong="G2316" God|strong="G2316";
23 but|strong="G1161" throughout|strong="G1722" my|strong="G1722" body I|strong="G1473" see a|strong="G2532" different|strong="G2087" law|strong="G3551", one|strong="G3588" which|strong="G3588" is|strong="G1510" in|strong="G1722" conflict with|strong="G1722" the|strong="G1722" law|strong="G3551" accepted by|strong="G1722" my|strong="G1722" reason, and|strong="G2532" which|strong="G3588" endeavours to|strong="G2532" make|strong="G2532" me|strong="G1473" a|strong="G2532" prisoner to|strong="G2532" that|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551" of|strong="G2532" sin which|strong="G3588" exists throughout|strong="G1722" my|strong="G1722" body.
24 Miserable man|strong="G3778" that|strong="G3588" I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1473"! Who|strong="G5101" will|strong="G5101" deliver|strong="G4506" me|strong="G1473" from|strong="G1537" the|strong="G1537" body|strong="G4983" that|strong="G3588" is|strong="G3588" bringing me|strong="G1473" to|strong="G5101" this|strong="G3778" death|strong="G2288"?
25 Thank|strong="G5485" God|strong="G2316", there|strong="G1161" is|strong="G3588" deliverance through|strong="G1223" Jesus|strong="G2424" Christ|strong="G5547", our|strong="G2316" Lord|strong="G2962"! Well then|strong="G3767", for|strong="G1223" myself|strong="G1473", with|strong="G1223" my|strong="G1473" reason|strong="G1223" I|strong="G1473" serve|strong="G1398" the|strong="G1161" Law|strong="G3551" of|strong="G1223" God|strong="G2316", but|strong="G1161" with|strong="G1223" my|strong="G1473" earthly|strong="G4561" nature the|strong="G1161" Law|strong="G3551" of|strong="G1223" sin.
