2 It’s like what|strong="G3588" the|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551" says about|strong="G3588" marriage|strong="G1135": A|strong="G1437" woman|strong="G1135" must|strong="G1135" stay married|strong="G1135" to|strong="G1135" her|strong="G1437" husband|strong="G0435" as|strong="G1161" long as|strong="G1161" he|strong="G1437" is|strong="G3588" alive|strong="G2198". But|strong="G1161" if|strong="G1437" her|strong="G1437" husband|strong="G0435" dies|strong="G0599", she|strong="G1437" is|strong="G3588" made free from|strong="G0575" the|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551" of|strong="G0575" marriage|strong="G1135".
3 But|strong="G1161" if|strong="G1437" she|strong="G0846" marries another|strong="G2087" man|strong="G0435" while|strong="G1510" her|strong="G0846" husband|strong="G0435" is|strong="G1510" still alive|strong="G2198", the|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551" says she|strong="G0846" is|strong="G1510" guilty of|strong="G0575" adultery|strong="G3428". But|strong="G1161" if|strong="G1437" her|strong="G0846" husband|strong="G0435" dies|strong="G0599", she|strong="G0846" is|strong="G1510" made|strong="G1096" free|strong="G1658" from|strong="G0575" the|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551" of|strong="G0575" marriage. Now|strong="G2532" you|strong="G5210" belong|strong="G1537" to|strong="G1519" someone|strong="G2087" else|strong="G2087". 6 In|strong="G1722" the|strong="G3588" past the|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551" held us|strong="G1722" as|strong="G1722" prisoners, but|strong="G1161" our|strong="G2532" old selves died|strong="G0599", and|strong="G2532" we|strong="G2249" were|strong="G3739" made free from|strong="G0575" the|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551". So|strong="G2532" now|strong="G1161" we|strong="G2249" serve|strong="G1398" God in|strong="G1722" a|strong="G3739" new way|strong="G1722", not|strong="G3756" in|strong="G1722" the|strong="G3588" old way|strong="G1722", with|strong="G1722" the|strong="G3588" written rules. Now|strong="G1161" we|strong="G2249" serve|strong="G1398" God in|strong="G1722" the|strong="G3588" new way|strong="G1722", with|strong="G1722" the|strong="G3588" Spirit|strong="G4151".
7 You|strong="G1487" might think I|strong="G1487" am|strong="G1096" saying|strong="G3004" that|strong="G1097" sin|strong="G0266" and|strong="G5037" the|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551" are|strong="G3588" the|strong="G3588" same. That|strong="G1097" is|strong="G5101" not|strong="G3756" true. But|strong="G0235" the|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551" was|strong="G3588" the|strong="G3588" only|strong="G1487" way|strong="G1223" I|strong="G1487" could|strong="G1096" learn|strong="G1097" what|strong="G5101" sin|strong="G0266" means|strong="G3004". I|strong="G1487" would|strong="G1096" never|strong="G3756" have|strong="G1096" known|strong="G1097" it|strong="G1223" is|strong="G5101" wrong to|strong="G3004" want something|strong="G5101" that|strong="G1097" is|strong="G5101" not|strong="G3756" mine. But|strong="G0235" the|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551" said|strong="G3004", “You|strong="G1487" must|strong="G0235" not|strong="G3756" want what|strong="G5101" belongs to|strong="G3004" someone else.”
8 And|strong="G1161" sin|strong="G0266" found a|strong="G2983" way|strong="G1722" to|strong="G1722" use that|strong="G3956" command|strong="G1785" and|strong="G1161" make me|strong="G1473" want all|strong="G3956" kinds|strong="G3956" of|strong="G1223" things|strong="G3956" that|strong="G3956" weren’t mine|strong="G1473". So|strong="G1161" sin|strong="G0266" came|strong="G1223" to|strong="G1722" me|strong="G1473" because|strong="G1223" of|strong="G1223" the|strong="G3956" command|strong="G1785". But|strong="G1161" without|strong="G5565" the|strong="G3956" law|strong="G3551", sin|strong="G0266" has|strong="G1473" no power.
9 Before|strong="G3588" I|strong="G1473" knew the|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551", I|strong="G1473" was|strong="G3588" alive|strong="G2198". But|strong="G1161" when|strong="G1161" I|strong="G1473" heard the|strong="G3588" law’s command|strong="G1785", sin|strong="G0266" began to|strong="G2064" live|strong="G2198",
10 and|strong="G2532" I|strong="G1473" died|strong="G0599" spiritually. The|strong="G3588" command|strong="G1785" was|strong="G3588" meant to|strong="G1519" bring|strong="G1519" life|strong="G2222", but|strong="G1161" for|strong="G1519" me|strong="G1473" it|strong="G2147" brought|strong="G1519" death|strong="G2288".
11 Sin|strong="G0266" found a|strong="G2983" way|strong="G1223" to|strong="G2532" fool me|strong="G1473" by|strong="G1223" using the|strong="G3588" command|strong="G1785" to|strong="G2532" make me|strong="G1473" die|strong="G1223".
12 Now|strong="G2532" the|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551" is|strong="G0018" holy|strong="G0040", and|strong="G2532" the|strong="G3588" command|strong="G1785" is|strong="G0018" holy|strong="G0040" and|strong="G2532" right|strong="G1342" and|strong="G2532" good|strong="G0018".
13 Does|strong="G1096" this|strong="G3588" mean that|strong="G2443" something that|strong="G2443" is|strong="G0018" good|strong="G0018" brought|strong="G1096" death|strong="G2288" to|strong="G2443" me|strong="G1473"? No|strong="G3361", it|strong="G1223" was|strong="G3588" sin|strong="G0266" that|strong="G2443" used the|strong="G3588" good|strong="G0018" command|strong="G1785" to|strong="G2443" bring me|strong="G1473" death|strong="G2288". This|strong="G3588" shows how terrible sin|strong="G0266" really is|strong="G0018". 14 We|strong="G3754" know|strong="G1492" that|strong="G3754" the|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551" is|strong="G1510" spiritual|strong="G4152", but|strong="G1161" I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1510" not|strong="G1510". I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1510" so|strong="G1161" human|strong="G4560". Sin|strong="G0266" rules me|strong="G1473" as|strong="G1161" if|strong="G3748" I|strong="G1473" were|strong="G1510" its|strong="G5259" slave.
15 I|strong="G3739" don’t|strong="G3756" understand|strong="G1097" why|strong="G1063" I|strong="G3739" act|strong="G4160" the|strong="G4160" way|strong="G3739" I|strong="G3739" do|strong="G4160". I|strong="G3739" don’t|strong="G3756" do|strong="G4160" the|strong="G4160" good I|strong="G3739" want|strong="G2309" to|strong="G2309" do|strong="G4160", and|strong="G4160" I|strong="G3739" do|strong="G4160" the|strong="G4160" evil I|strong="G3739" hate|strong="G3404".
16 And|strong="G1161" if|strong="G1487" I|strong="G3739" don’t|strong="G3756" want|strong="G2309" to|strong="G2309" do|strong="G4160" what|strong="G3739" I|strong="G3739" do|strong="G4160", that|strong="G3754" means I|strong="G3739" agree|strong="G4852" that|strong="G3754" the|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551" is|strong="G3778" good|strong="G2570".
17 But|strong="G1161" I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1473" not|strong="G3765" really the|strong="G3588" one|strong="G3588" doing|strong="G2716" the|strong="G3588" evil. It|strong="G0846" is|strong="G3588" sin|strong="G0266" living in|strong="G1722" me|strong="G1473" that|strong="G0846" does|strong="G2716" it|strong="G0846".
18 Yes|strong="G1063", I|strong="G1473" know|strong="G1492" that|strong="G3754" nothing|strong="G3756" good|strong="G0018" lives|strong="G3611" in|strong="G1722" me|strong="G1473"—I|strong="G1473" mean|strong="G1510" nothing|strong="G3756" good|strong="G0018" lives|strong="G3611" in|strong="G1722" the|strong="G3588" part|strong="G1473" of|strong="G1722" me|strong="G1473" that|strong="G3754" is|strong="G1510" not|strong="G3756" spiritual. I|strong="G1473" want|strong="G2309" to|strong="G2309" do|strong="G1492" what|strong="G3588" is|strong="G1510" good|strong="G0018", but|strong="G1161" I|strong="G1473" don’t|strong="G3756" do|strong="G1492" it|strong="G1161".
19 I|strong="G3739" don’t|strong="G3756" do|strong="G4160" the|strong="G4160" good|strong="G0018" that|strong="G3739" I|strong="G3739" want|strong="G2309" to|strong="G2309" do|strong="G4160". I|strong="G3739" do|strong="G4160" the|strong="G4160" evil|strong="G2556" that|strong="G3739" I|strong="G3739" don’t|strong="G3756" want|strong="G2309" to|strong="G2309" do|strong="G4160".
20 So|strong="G1161" if|strong="G1487" I|strong="G1473" do|strong="G4160" what|strong="G3739" I|strong="G1473" don’t|strong="G3756" want|strong="G2309" to|strong="G2309" do|strong="G4160", then|strong="G1161" I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G2309" not|strong="G3756" really the|strong="G3588" one|strong="G3739" doing|strong="G4160" it|strong="G0846". It|strong="G0846" is|strong="G3778" the|strong="G3588" sin|strong="G0266" living in|strong="G1722" me|strong="G1473" that|strong="G3739" does|strong="G4160" it|strong="G0846".
21 So|strong="G0686" I|strong="G1473" have|strong="G3748" learned this|strong="G3588" rule: When|strong="G2147" I|strong="G1473" want|strong="G2309" to|strong="G2309" do|strong="G4160" good|strong="G2570", evil|strong="G2556" is|strong="G3588" there|strong="G0686" with|strong="G4160" me|strong="G1473".
22 In|strong="G2596" my|strong="G2596" mind I|strong="G2316" am happy with|strong="G2316" God’s|strong="G2316" law|strong="G3551".
23 But|strong="G1161" I|strong="G1473" see|strong="G0991" another|strong="G2087" law|strong="G3551" working in|strong="G1722" my|strong="G1722" body. That|strong="G0991" law|strong="G3551" makes war|strong="G0497" against|strong="G1722" the|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551" that|strong="G0991" my|strong="G1722" mind|strong="G3563" accepts. That|strong="G0991" other|strong="G2087" law|strong="G3551" working in|strong="G1722" my|strong="G1722" body is|strong="G1510" the|strong="G3588" law|strong="G3551" of|strong="G3551" sin|strong="G0266", and|strong="G2532" that|strong="G0991" law|strong="G3551" makes me|strong="G1473" its prisoner|strong="G0163".
24 What|strong="G5101" a|strong="G0444" miserable person|strong="G0444" I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1473"! Who|strong="G3588" will|strong="G5101" save me|strong="G1473" from|strong="G1537" this|strong="G3778" body|strong="G4983" that|strong="G3778" brings me|strong="G1473" death|strong="G2288"?
