1 The ⌞Israelites⌟ set out, and they encamped on the desert-plateau of Moab, across from Jericho beyond the Jordan.
1 Depois partiram os filhos de Israel, e acamparam-se nas campinas de Moabe, além do Jordão na altura de Jericó.
2 Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel did to the Amorites,
2 Vendo, pois, Balaque, filho de Zipor, tudo o que Israel fizera aos amorreus,
3 and Moab was very terrified in the presence of the people because ⌞they⌟ were numerous; and Moab dreaded the presence of the ⌞Israelites⌟.
3 Moabe temeu muito diante deste povo, porque era numeroso; e Moabe andava angustiado por causa dos filhos de Israel.
4 And Moab said to the elders of Midian, “Now the crowd will lick up all around us, like a bull devours the grass of the field.” And Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.
4 Por isso Moabe disse aos anciãos dos midianitas: Agora lamberá esta congregação tudo quanto houver ao redor de nós, como o boi lambe a erva do campo. Naquele tempo Balaque, filho de Zipor, era rei dos moabitas.
5 He sent messengers to Balaam son of Beor at Pethor, which is by the river, in the land of the children of his people, to summon him, saying, “Look! A people went out from Egypt. Look! They cover ⌞the surface of the land⌟; they are about to dwell opposite me.
5 Este enviou mensageiros a Balaão, filho de Beor, a Petor, que está junto ao rio, na terra dos filhos do seu povo, a chamá-lo, dizendo: Eis que um povo saiu do Egito; eis que cobre a face da terra, e está parado defronte de mim.
6 Now, please go, curse this people for me because they are stronger than me; perhaps I will be able to strike them and drive them out from the land because I know whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you cursed is cursed.”
6 Vem, pois, agora, rogo-te, amaldiçoa-me este povo, pois mais poderoso é do que eu; talvez o poderei ferir e lançar fora da terra; porque eu sei que, a quem tu abençoares será abençoado, e a quem tu amaldiçoares será amaldiçoado.
7 So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian went with a fee for divination in their hand; they came to Balaam and spoke the words of Balak to him.
7 Então foram-se os anciãos dos moabitas e os anciãos dos midianitas com o preço dos encantamentos nas suas mãos; e chegaram a Balaão, e disseram-lhe as palavras de Balaque.
8 He said to them, “Spend the night here, and I will return, and I will return word to you, just as Yahweh speaks to me.” So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.
8 E ele lhes disse: Passai aqui esta noite, e vos trarei a resposta, como o Senhor me falar; então os príncipes dos moabitas ficaram com Balaão.
9 And God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?”
9 E veio Deus a Balaão, e disse: Quem são estes homens que estão contigo?
10 And Balaam said to God, “Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent word to me,
10 E Balaão disse a Deus: Balaque, filho de Zipor, rei dos moabitas, os enviou, dizendo:
11 ‘Look! A people went out from Egypt. Look! They cover ⌞the surface of the land⌟. Now, go, curse them for me. Perhaps I will be able to attack them and drive them out.”
11 Eis que o povo que saiu do Egito cobre a face da terra; vem agora, amaldiçoa-o; porventura poderei pelejar contra ele e expulsá-lo.
12 God said to Balaam, “You will not go with them; you will not curse the people, because they are blessed.”
12 Então disse Deus a Balaão: Não irás com eles, nem amaldiçoarás a este povo, porquanto é bendito.
13 Balaam got up in the morning, and he said to the princes of Balak, “Go to your land, because Yahweh refused to allow me to go with you.”
13 Então Balaão levantou-se pela manhã, e disse aos príncipes de Balaque: Ide à vossa terra, porque o Senhor recusa deixar-me ir convosco.
14 The princes of Moab got up and went to Balak, and they said, “Balaam refused to come with us.”
14 E levantaram-se os príncipes dos moabitas, e vieram a Balaque, e disseram: Balaão recusou vir conosco.
15 Balak again sent many princes, who were more honored ⌞than the former⌟.
15 Porém Balaque tornou a enviar mais príncipes, mais honrados do que aqueles.
16 They came to Balaam and said to him, “Thus says Balak son of Zippor, ‘Please, let nothing keep you from coming to me
16 Os quais foram a Balaão, e lhe disseram: Assim diz Balaque, filho de Zipor: Rogo-te que não te demores em vir a mim.
17 because I will surely honor you greatly, and all that you say to me I will do. Please, come; curse this people for me.’ ”
17 Porque grandemente te honrarei, e farei tudo o que me disseres; vem pois, rogo-te, amaldiçoa-me este povo.
18 Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, “Even though Balak gives to me his house full of silver and gold, I am not able to go beyond ⌞the command of Yahweh⌟ my God to do a little or a lot.
18 Então Balaão respondeu, e disse aos servos de Balaque: Ainda que Balaque me desse a sua casa cheia de prata e de ouro, eu não poderia ir além da ordem do Senhor meu Deus, para fazer coisa pequena ou grande;
19 And now please, ⌞you also stay here⌟ the night, and ⌞let me find out⌟ again what Yahweh will say with me.”
19 Agora, pois, rogo-vos que também aqui fiqueis esta noite, para que eu saiba o que mais o Senhor me dirá.
20 And God came to Balaam at night, and he said to him, “If the men have come to call you, get up and go with them; but only the word that I will speak to you, you will do.”
20 Veio, pois, Deus a Balaão, de noite, e disse-lhe: Se aqueles homens te vieram chamar, levanta-te, vai com eles; todavia, farás o que eu te disser.
21 So Balaam got up in the morning and saddled his donkey, and he went with the princes of Moab.
21 Então Balaão levantou-se pela manhã, e albardou a sua jumenta, e foi com os príncipes de Moabe.
22 But ⌞God became angry⌟ because he was going, and the angel of Yahweh stood in the road as an adversary to him; he was riding on his donkey, and two servants were with him.
22 E a ira de Deus acendeu-se, porque ele se ia; e o anjo do Senhor pôs-se-lhe no caminho por adversário; e ele ia caminhando, montado na sua jumenta, e dois de seus servos com ele.
23 The donkey saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with his sword drawn in his hand, and the donkey turned aside from the road and went into the field. And Balaam struck the donkey to turn her back to the road.
23 Viu, pois, a jumenta o anjo do Senhor, que estava no caminho, com a sua espada desembainhada na mão; pelo que desviou-se a jumenta do caminho, indo pelo campo; então Balaão espancou a jumenta para fazê-la tornar ao caminho.
24 The angel of Yahweh stood in the narrow path of the vineyards, with ⌞a wall on either side⌟.
24 Mas o anjo do Senhor pôs-se numa vereda entre as vinhas, havendo uma parede de um e de outro lado.
25 When the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, she pressed herself into the wall, and she pressed the foot of Balaam into the wall, so he struck her again.
25 Vendo, pois, a jumenta, o anjo do Senhor, encostou-se contra a parede, e apertou contra a parede o pé de Balaão; por isso tornou a espancá-la.
26 Then the angel of Yahweh went further ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was not a way to turn aside to the right or left.
26 Então o anjo do Senhor passou mais adiante, e pôs-se num lugar estreito, onde não havia caminho para se desviar nem para a direita nem para a esquerda.
27 When the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, she lay down under Balaam, so ⌞Balaam became angry⌟, and he struck the donkey with his staff.
27 E, vendo a jumenta o anjo do Senhor, deitou-se debaixo de Balaão; e a ira de Balaão acendeu-se, e espancou a jumenta com o bordão.
28 Yahweh opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What did I do to you that you struck me these three times?”
28 Então o Senhor abriu a boca da jumenta, a qual disse a Balaão: Que te fiz eu, que me espancaste estas três vezes?
29 Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you made a mockery of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now!”
29 E Balaão disse à jumenta: Por que zombaste de mim; quem dera tivesse eu uma espada na mão, porque agora te mataria.
30 The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey on which you have ridden all your life until this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?” He said, “No.”
30 E a jumenta disse a Balaão: Porventura não sou a tua jumenta, em que cavalgaste desde o tempo em que me tornei tua até hoje? Acaso tem sido o meu costume fazer assim contigo? E ele respondeu: Não.
31 Then Yahweh exposed the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the road with his sword drawn in his hand, and he bowed down and worshiped to his face.
31 Então o Senhor abriu os olhos a Balaão, e ele viu o anjo do Senhor, que estava no caminho e a sua espada desembainhada na mão; pelo que inclinou a cabeça, e prostrou-se sobre a sua face.
32 The angel of Yahweh said to him, “Why have you struck this donkey three times? Look, I have come out as an adversary because your conduct is perverse before me.
32 Então o anjo do Senhor lhe disse: Por que já três vezes espancaste a tua jumenta? Eis que eu saí para ser teu adversário, porquanto o teu caminho é perverso diante de mim;
33 The donkey saw me and turned aside from me these three times. If she had not turned aside from my face, then I would have killed you and kept her alive.”
33 Porém a jumenta me viu, e já três vezes se desviou de diante de mim; se ela não se desviasse de diante de mim, na verdade que eu agora te haveria matado, e a ela deixaria com vida.
34 Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, “I have sinned because I did not know that you were standing to meet me in the road. Now, ⌞if it is displeasing to you⌟, I will turn back.”
34 Então Balaão disse ao anjo do Senhor: Pequei, porque não sabia que estavas neste caminho para te opores a mim; e agora, se parece mal aos teus olhos, voltarei.
35 The angel of Yahweh said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but speak only the word that I will speak to you.” So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
35 E disse o anjo do Senhor a Balaão: Vai-te com estes homens; mas somente a palavra que eu falar a ti, esta falarás. Assim Balaão se foi com os príncipes de Balaque.
36 When Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him by the city of Moab, which was on the boundary of Aaron at the end of the territory.
36 Ouvindo, pois, Balaque que Balaão vinha, saiu-lhe ao encontro até à cidade de Moabe, que está no termo de Arnom, na extremidade do termo dele.
37 And Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not urgently send to meet with you? Why did you not come to me? Am I really not able to honor you?”
37 E Balaque disse a Balaão: Porventura não enviei diligentemente a chamar-te? Por que não vieste a mim? Não posso eu na verdade honrar-te?
38 Balaam said to Balak, “Look, I came to you now. Am I really able to speak anything at all? I speak the word that God puts in my mouth.”
38 Então Balaão disse a Balaque: Eis que eu tenho vindo a ti; porventura poderei eu agora de alguma forma falar alguma coisa? A palavra que Deus puser na minha boca, essa falarei.
39 Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath-Huzoth.
39 E Balaão foi com Balaque, e chegaram a Quiriate-Huzote.
40 And Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep, and he sent them to Balaam and to the princes who were with him.
40 Então Balaque matou bois e ovelhas; e deles enviou a Balaão e aos príncipes que estavam com ele.
41 And it happened, in the morning Balak took Balaam and took him up to Bamoth-Baal, and he saw from there the end of the nation.
41 E sucedeu que, pela manhã Balaque tomou a Balaão, e o fez subir aos altos de Baal, e viu ele dali a última parte do povo.
