1 Then, after these things were completed, the leaders came to me, saying: “The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, have not been separated from the peoples of the lands and from their abominations, especially those of the Canaanites, and Hittites, and Perizzites, and Jebusites, and Ammonites, and Moabites, and Egyptians, and Amorites.
1 Acabadas, pois, estas coisas, chegaram-se a mim os príncipes, dizendo: O povo de Israel, os sacerdotes e os levitas, não se têm separado dos povos destas terras, seguindo as abominações dos cananeus, dos heteus, dos perizeus, dos jebuseus, dos amonitas, dos moabitas, dos egípcios, e dos amorreus.
2 For they have taken from their daughters for themselves and for their sons, and they have mixed a holy lineage with the peoples of the lands. And even the hand of the leaders and the magistrates has been first in this transgression.”
2 Porque tomaram das suas filhas para si e para seus filhos, e assim se misturou a linhagem santa com os povos dessas terras; e até os príncipes e magistrados foram os primeiros nesta transgressão.
3 And when I had heard this word, I tore my cloak and my tunic, and I pulled out the hairs of my head and beard, and I sat in mourning.
3 E, ouvindo eu tal coisa, rasguei as minhas vestes e o meu manto, e arranquei os cabelos da minha cabeça e da minha barba, e sentei-me atônito.
4 Then all those who feared the word of the God of Israel gathered to me, because of the transgression of those who had arrived from the captivity. And I sat in sorrow, until the evening sacrifice.
4 Então se ajuntaram a mim todos os que tremiam das palavras do Deus de Israel por causa da transgressão dos do cativeiro; porém eu permaneci sentado atônito até ao sacrifício da tarde.
5 And at the evening sacrifice, I rose up from my affliction, and, having torn my cloak and my tunic, I fell to my knees, and I reached out my hands to the Lord, my God.
5 E perto do sacrifício da tarde me levantei da minha aflição, havendo já rasgado as minhas vestes e o meu manto, e me pus de joelhos, e estendi as minhas mãos para o Senhor meu Deus;
6 And I said: “My God, I am confounded and ashamed to lift up my face to you. For our iniquities have been multiplied over our heads, and our offenses have increased, even up to heaven,
6 E disse: Meu Deus! Estou confuso e envergonhado, para levantar a ti a minha face, meu Deus; porque as nossas iniqüidades se multiplicaram sobre a nossa cabeça, e a nossa culpa tem crescido até aos céus.
7 from the days of our fathers. But also, we ourselves have sinned gravely, even to this day. And for our iniquities, we ourselves, and our kings and our priests, have been delivered into the hands of the kings of the lands, and to the sword, and to captivity, and to plunder, and to confusion of face, just as it is also in this day.
7 Desde os dias de nossos pais até ao dia de hoje estamos em grande culpa, e por causa das nossas iniqüidades somos entregues, nós e nossos reis e os nossos sacerdotes, na mão dos reis das terras, à espada, ao cativeiro, e ao roubo, e à confusão do rosto, como hoje se vê.
8 And now, to a small extent and for a moment, our petition has been made with the Lord our God, so that they may leave us a remnant, and so that a secure place in his holy land may be given to us, and so that our God may illuminate our eyes, and may give us a little life in our servitude.
8 E agora, por um pequeno momento, se manifestou a graça da parte do Senhor, nosso Deus, para nos deixar alguns que escapem, e para dar-nos uma estaca no seu santo lugar; para nos iluminar os olhos, ó Deus nosso, e para nos dar um pouco de vida na nossa servidão.
9 For we are servants, yet in our servitude our God has not forsaken us, but he has inclined mercy upon us in the sight of the king of the Persians, so that he may give us life, and may raise up the house of our God, and repair its desolations, and give us a hedge in Judah and Jerusalem.
9 Porque somos servos; porém na nossa servidão não nos desamparou o nosso Deus; antes estendeu sobre nós a sua benignidade perante os reis da Pérsia, para que nos desse vida, para levantarmos a casa do nosso Deus, e para restaurarmos as suas assolações; e para que nos desse uma parede de proteção em Judá e em Jerusalém.
10 And now, our God, what should we say after these things? For we abandoned your commandments,
10 Agora, pois, ó nosso Deus, que diremos depois disto? Pois deixamos os teus mandamentos,
11 which you instructed by the hand of your servants, the prophets, saying: ‘The land, which you shall enter so that you may possess it, is an unclean land, due to the uncleanness of the peoples and of the other lands, the abominations of those who have filled it, from mouth to mouth, with their filth.’
11 Os quais mandaste pelo ministério de teus servos, os profetas, dizendo: A terra em que entrais para a possuir, terra imunda é pelas imundícias dos povos das terras, pelas suas abominações com que, na sua corrupção a encheram, de uma extremidade à outra.
12 Now therefore, you should not give your daughters to their sons, nor should you receive their daughters for your sons. And you should not seek their peace, nor their prosperity, even forever. So shall you be strengthened, and so shall you eat the good things of the land, and have your sons as your heirs, even for all time.
12 Agora, pois, vossas filhas não dareis a seus filhos, e suas filhas não tomareis para vossos filhos, e nunca procurareis a sua paz e o seu bem; para que sejais fortes, e comais o bem da terra, e a deixeis por herança a vossos filhos para sempre.
13 And after all that has happened to us because of our very wicked works and our great offense, you, our God, have freed us from our iniquity, and you have given us salvation, just as it is this day,
13 E depois de tudo o que nos tem sucedido por causa das nossas más obras, e da nossa grande culpa, porquanto tu, ó nosso Deus, impediste que fôssemos destruídos, por causa da nossa iniqüidade, e ainda nos deste um remanescente como este;
14 so that we would not turn away and make your commandments void, and so that we would not unite in marriage with the peoples of these abominations. Could you be angry with us even to the very end, so that you would not leave us a remnant to be saved?
14 Tornaremos, pois, agora a violar os teus mandamentos e a aparentar-nos com os povos destas abominações? Não te indignarias tu assim contra nós até de todo nos consumir, até que não ficasse remanescente nem quem escapasse?
15 O Lord, the God of Israel, you are just. For we have been left behind to be saved, just as it is this day. Behold, we are before your sight in our offense. And it is not possible to withstand you in this matter.”
15 Ah! Senhor Deus de Israel, justo és, pois ficamos qual um remanescente que escapou, como hoje se vê; eis que estamos diante de ti, na nossa culpa, porque ninguém há que possa estar na tua presença, por causa disto.
