1 Also these are the proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah the king of Judah have collected.
1 Ainda alguns provérbios de Salomão, recolhidos pelos homens de Ezequias, rei de Judá.
2 It is the honor of God to conceal a thing; but the honor of kings is to search out a matter.
2 A glória de Deus é ocultar uma coisa; a glória dos reis é esquadrinhá-la.
3 As are the heavens for height, and the earth is for depth, so should the heart of kings be unsearchable.
3 A altura dos céus, a profundeza da terra são impenetráveis, bem como o coração dos reis.
4 Take away the dross from the silver, and there will come forth a vessel for the melter.
4 Tira as escórias da prata e terás um vaso para o ourives;
5 Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne will be firmly established in righteousness.
5 afasta o mau de presença do rei e seu trono se firmará na justiça.
6 Do not glorify thyself in the presence of the king, and force thyself not into the place of great men;
6 Não te faças de pretensioso diante do rei, não te ponhas no lugar dos grandes.
7 For better it is that it be said unto thee, "Come up hither," than that thou shouldst be put lower in the presence of the prince, which thy own eyes have often seen.
7 É melhor que te digam: Sobe aqui!, do que seres humilhado diante de um personagem. O que teus olhos viram,
8 Do not proceed to a contest hastily, lest thou know not what thou wilt have to do at its end, when thy neighbor hath put thee to confusion.
8 não o descubras com precipitação numa contenda, pois, no final das contas, que farás tu quando o outro te houver confundido?
9 Carry on thy cause with thy neighbor; but lay not open the secret of another:
9 Trata teu negócio com teu próximo de maneira a não revelar o segredo de outro,
10 Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thy infamy never be removed.
10 para que não sejas repreendido por aquele que o ouviu nem incorras em descrédito irreparável.
11 Like apples of gold among figures of silver is a word spoken in a proper manner.
11 Maçãs de ouro sobre prata gravada: tais são as palavras oportunas.
12 As an earring of gold, and a pendant of fine gold, so is a wise reprover toward an ear that listeneth.
12 Anel de ouro, jóia de ouro fino: tal é o sábio que admoesta um ouvido atento.
13 As the cooling of snow on a harvestday, so is a faithful messenger to those that send him; for he refresheth the soul of his master.
13 Frescor de neve no tempo da colheita, tal é um mensageiro fiel para quem o envia: ele restaura a alma de seu senhor.
14 Like clouds and wind without rain, so is a man that vaunteth falsely of a gift.
14 Nuvens e vento sem chuva: tal é o homem que se gaba falsamente de dar.
15 By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh bones.
15 Pela paciência o juiz se deixa aplacar: a língua que fala com brandura pode quebrantar ossos.
16 Hast thou found honey: eat so much as is sufficient for thee: lest thou consume too much of it, and have to vomit it forth.
16 Achaste mel? Come o que for suficiente: se comeres demais, tu o vomitarás.
17 Make thy foot scarce in the house of thy friend: lest he have too much of thee, and so hate thee.
17 Põe raramente o pé na casa do vizinho: enfastiado de ti, ele te viria a aborrecer.
18 A battleaxe, and a sword, and a sharpened arrow is a man that testifieth as a false witness against his neighbor.
18 Clava, espada, flecha penetrante: tal é o que usa de falso testemunho contra seu próximo.
19 Like a broken tooth and a foot out of joint, is confidence in a treacherous man in a time of distress.
19 Dente arruinado, pé que resvala: tal é a confiança de um pérfido no dia da desventura.
20 As he that taketh off his garment on a cold day, as vinegar is upon natron: so is he that singeth songs before an unhappy heart.
20 Tirar a capa num dia de frio, derramar vinagre numa ferida: isso faz aquele que canta canções a um coração atribulado.
21 If thy enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink;
21 Tem o teu inimigo fome? Dá-lhe de comer. Tem sede? Dá-lhe de beber:
22 For though thou gatherest coals of fire upon his head, yet will the Lord repay it unto thee.
22 assim amontoarás brasas ardentes sobre sua cabeça e o Senhor te recompensará.
23 The north wind bringeth forth rain: so doth secret talking, angry countenances.
23 O vento norte traz chuva e a língua detratora anuvia os semblantes.
24 It is better to dwell in the corner of a roof, than with a quarrelsome woman even in a roomy house.
24 É melhor habitar um canto do terraço do que viver com uma mulher impertinente.
25 As cold water is to a fainting soul, so are good news from a faroff country.
25 Água fresca para uma garganta sedenta: tal é uma boa nova vinda de terra longínqua.
26 Like a turbid spring and a corrupt fountain, is a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked.
26 Fonte turva e manancial contaminado: tal é o justo que cede diante do ímpio.
27 To eat too much honey is not good: so is it honor to set a limit to mens honor.
27 Comer mel em demasia não é bom: usa de moderação nas palavras elogiosas.
28 Like a city that is broken in, and is without walls: so is the man that hath no control over his spirit.
28 Como uma cidade desmantelada, sem muralhas: tal é o homem que não é senhor de si.
