1 From whence are there among you wars and strifes? Is it not from the lusts which war in your members?
1 Donde vêm as guerras e pelejas entre vós? Porventura, não vêm disto, a saber, dos vossos deleites, que nos vossos membros guerreiam?
2 You desire, and have not; you kill and are emulous, yet it cometh not into your hands; you strive and make wars, and nothing have because you do not ask;
2 Cobiçais e nada tendes; sois invejosos e cobiçosos e não podeis alcançar; combateis e guerreais e nada tendes, porque não pedis.
3 you ask and receive not, because you ask wickedly, as that you may cherish your lusts.
3 Pedis e não recebeis, porque pedis mal, para o gastardes em vossos deleites.
4 Adulterers, know you not that the friendship of this world is enmity with Aloha? He, therefore, who willeth to be the friend of this world, hath become the enemy of Aloha.
4 Adúlteros e adúlteras, não sabeis vós que a amizade do mundo é inimizade contra Deus? Portanto, qualquer que quiser ser amigo do mundo constitui-se inimigo de Deus.
5 Or do you vainly think that the scripture saith, that In emulation desireth the Spirit who dwelleth in us?
5 Ou cuidais vós que em vão diz a Escritura: O Espírito que em nós habita tem ciúmes?
6 But more excellent grace hath our Lord given unto us. Wherefore he saith, Aloha humbleth the proud, and to the humble he giveth grace.
6 Antes, dá maior graça. Portanto, diz: Deus resiste aos soberbos, dá, porém, graça aos humildes.
7 BE subject, therefore, unto Aloha; withstand Satana, and he will flee from you;
7 Sujeitai-vos, pois, a Deus; resisti ao diabo, e ele fugirá de vós.
8 and draw nigh unto Aloha, and he will be nigh you. Purify your hands, sinners, and sanctify your hearts, divided of soul.
8 Chegai-vos a Deus, e ele se chegará a vós. Limpai as mãos, pecadores; e, vós de duplo ânimo, purificai o coração.
9 Be humbled and sorrowful, and let your laughter be turned into grief, and your gladness into anxiety.
9 Senti as vossas misérias, e lamentai, e chorai; converta-se o vosso riso em pranto, e o vosso gozo, em tristeza.
10 Be humbled before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
10 Humilhai-vos perante o Senhor, e ele vos exaltará.
11 Speak not against one another, my brethren; for he who speaketh against his brother, or judgeth his brother, speaketh against the law, and judgeth the law. And if the law thou judgest, thou art not a doer of the law, but the judge of it.
11 Irmãos, não faleis mal uns dos outros. Quem fala mal de um irmão e julga a seu irmão fala mal da lei e julga a lei; e, se tu julgas a lei, já não és observador da lei, mas juiz.
12 For one is the appointer of the law and the Judge, who can save and destroy. But thou, who art thou, who judgest thy neighbour?
12 Há só um Legislador e um Juiz, que pode salvar e destruir. Tu, porém, quem és, que julgas a outrem?
13 But what shall we say of them who say, To-day or tomorrow we will go to this city, or that, and work there one year, and negotiate, and make gain?
13 Eia, agora, vós que dizeis: Hoje ou amanhã, iremos a tal cidade, e lá passaremos um ano, e contrataremos, e ganharemos.
14 and they know not what shall be on the morrow: for what is our life, but a vapour which for a little while is seen, and vanisheth and endeth?
14 Digo-vos que não sabeis o que acontecerá amanhã. Porque que é a vossa vida? É um vapor que aparece por um pouco e depois se desvanece.
15 For instead they should say, If the Lord will, and we live, we will do this or that.
15 Em lugar do que devíeis dizer: Se o Senhor quiser, e se vivermos, faremos isto ou aquilo.
16 They glory in their pride. All glorying such as this is from the Evil.
16 Mas, agora, vos gloriais em vossas presunções; toda glória tal como esta é maligna.
17 And he who knoweth the good and doeth it not, sin is to him.
17 Aquele, pois, que sabe fazer o bem e o não faz comete pecado.
