1 Some|strong="G5100" Pharisees|strong="G5330" and|strong="G2532" some|strong="G5100" teachers of|strong="G0575" the|strong="G3588" law came|strong="G2064" from|strong="G0575" Jerusalem|strong="G2414" and|strong="G2532" gathered|strong="G4863" around|strong="G4314" Jesus|strong="G0846".
2 They|strong="G0846" saw|strong="G3708" that|strong="G3754" some|strong="G5100" of|strong="G5100" his|strong="G0846" followers ate|strong="G2068" food|strong="G0740" with|strong="G2532" hands|strong="G5495" that|strong="G3754" were|strong="G1510" not|strong="G1510" clean, meaning that|strong="G3754" they|strong="G0846" did|strong="G1510" not|strong="G1510" wash their|strong="G0846" hands|strong="G5495" in|strong="G2532" a|strong="G1510" special way|strong="G0846".
3 The|strong="G3956" Pharisees|strong="G5330" and|strong="G2532" all|strong="G3956" the|strong="G3956" other Jews|strong="G2453" never|strong="G3756" eat|strong="G2068" before|strong="G3588" washing their|strong="G2532" hands|strong="G5495" in|strong="G2532" this|strong="G3588" special way|strong="G3956". They|strong="G2532" do|strong="G3361" this|strong="G3588" to|strong="G2532" follow the|strong="G3956" traditions|strong="G3862" they|strong="G2532" have|strong="G2532" from|strong="G3361" their|strong="G2532" great|strong="G3956" leaders who|strong="G3588" lived long ago.
4 And|strong="G2532" when|strong="G2532" these|strong="G3739" Jews buy something|strong="G4183" in|strong="G2532" the|strong="G2532" market|strong="G0058", they|strong="G3739" never|strong="G3756" eat|strong="G2068" it|strong="G1437" until|strong="G2532" they|strong="G3739" wash|strong="G0907" it|strong="G1437" in|strong="G2532" a|strong="G1510" special way|strong="G3739". They|strong="G3739" also|strong="G2532" follow other|strong="G0243" rules from|strong="G0575" their|strong="G2532" people|strong="G2068" who|strong="G3739" lived|strong="G1510" before|strong="G0575" them|strong="G3739". 5 The|strong="G3588" Pharisees|strong="G5330" and|strong="G2532" teachers of|strong="G1223" the|strong="G3588" law said|strong="G1905" to|strong="G2596" Jesus|strong="G0846", “Your|strong="G2532" followers don’t|strong="G3756" follow the|strong="G3588" traditions|strong="G3862" we|strong="G2532" have|strong="G2532" from|strong="G2596" our|strong="G2532" great|strong="G3756" leaders who|strong="G3588" lived|strong="G4043" long ago. They|strong="G0846" eat|strong="G2068" their|strong="G0846" food|strong="G0740" with|strong="G1223" hands|strong="G5495" that|strong="G0846" are|strong="G3588" not|strong="G3756" clean. Why|strong="G5101" do|strong="G5101" they|strong="G0846" do|strong="G5101" this|strong="G3588"?”
6 Jesus|strong="G0846" answered|strong="G3004", “You|strong="G5210" are|strong="G3778" all|strong="G3588" hypocrites|strong="G5273". Isaiah|strong="G2268" was|strong="G3588" right|strong="G2573" when|strong="G5613" he|strong="G0846" wrote|strong="G1125" these|strong="G3778" words from|strong="G0575" God|strong="G0846" about|strong="G4012" you|strong="G5210":
7 Their worship|strong="G4576" of|strong="G0444" me|strong="G1473" is|strong="G0444" worthless.
8 You|strong="G0863" have|strong="G0863" stopped following God’s|strong="G2316" commands|strong="G1785", preferring instead the|strong="G3588" man-made rules you|strong="G0863" got from|strong="G0444" others|strong="G0444".”
9 Then|strong="G2532" he|strong="G2532" said|strong="G3004", “You|strong="G5210" show great skill in|strong="G2316" avoiding the|strong="G3588" commands|strong="G1785" of|strong="G2316" God|strong="G2316" so|strong="G2443" that|strong="G2443" you|strong="G5210" can|strong="G3004" follow your|strong="G2532" own|strong="G0846" teachings!
10 Moses|strong="G3475" said|strong="G3004", ‘You|strong="G4771" must|strong="G3588" respect your|strong="G5091" father|strong="G3962" and|strong="G2532" mother|strong="G3384".’ He|strong="G2532" also|strong="G2532" said|strong="G3004", ‘Whoever|strong="G3588" says|strong="G3004" anything bad to|strong="G3004" their|strong="G2532" father|strong="G3962" or|strong="G2228" mother|strong="G3384" must|strong="G3588" be|strong="G2532" killed.’
11 But|strong="G1161" you|strong="G5210" teach that|strong="G3739" people|strong="G0444" can|strong="G3004" say|strong="G3004" to|strong="G3004" their|strong="G3739" father|strong="G3962" or|strong="G2228" mother|strong="G3384", ‘I|strong="G1473" have|strong="G1510" something|strong="G1510" I|strong="G1473" could use to|strong="G3004" help|strong="G5623" you|strong="G5210", but|strong="G1161" I|strong="G1473" will|strong="G1510" not|strong="G1510" use it|strong="G1437" for|strong="G1537" you|strong="G5210". I|strong="G1473" will|strong="G1510" give|strong="G3004" it|strong="G1437" to|strong="G3004" God|strong="G3004".’
12 You|strong="G4160" are|strong="G3588" telling people|strong="G0846" that|strong="G0846" they|strong="G0846" do|strong="G4160" not|strong="G3762" have|strong="G4160" to|strong="G2228" do|strong="G4160" anything|strong="G3762" for|strong="G2228" their|strong="G0846" father|strong="G3962" or|strong="G2228" mother|strong="G3384".
13 So|strong="G2532" you|strong="G5210" are|strong="G3739" teaching|strong="G3056" that|strong="G3739" it|strong="G4160" is|strong="G2316" not|strong="G4160" important to|strong="G2532" do|strong="G4160" what|strong="G3739" God|strong="G2316" said|strong="G3056". You|strong="G5210" think it|strong="G4160" is|strong="G2316" more|strong="G4183" important to|strong="G2532" follow those|strong="G3588" traditions|strong="G3862" you|strong="G5210" have|strong="G2532", which|strong="G3739" you|strong="G5210" pass|strong="G4160" on|strong="G4160" to|strong="G2532" others|strong="G3588". And|strong="G2532" you|strong="G5210" do|strong="G4160" many|strong="G4183" things|strong="G4183" like|strong="G5108" that|strong="G3739".”
14 Jesus|strong="G0846" called|strong="G3004" the|strong="G3956" people|strong="G3793" to|strong="G3004" him|strong="G0846" again|strong="G3825". He|strong="G2532" said|strong="G3004", “Everyone|strong="G3956" should|strong="G2532" listen|strong="G0191" to|strong="G3004" me|strong="G3004" and|strong="G2532" understand|strong="G4920" what|strong="G3588" I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1473" saying|strong="G3004".
15 There|strong="G1510" is|strong="G1510" nothing|strong="G3762" people|strong="G0444" can|strong="G1410" put in|strong="G1519" their|strong="G0846" mouth that|strong="G3739" will|strong="G1510" make them|strong="G0846" wrong. People|strong="G0444" are|strong="G1510" made|strong="G2840" wrong by|strong="G1537" what|strong="G3739" comes|strong="G1510" from|strong="G1537" inside them|strong="G0846".”
17 Then|strong="G2532" Jesus|strong="G0846" left|strong="G0575" the|strong="G3588" people|strong="G3793" and|strong="G2532" went|strong="G1525" into|strong="G1519" the|strong="G3588" house|strong="G3624". The|strong="G3588" followers asked|strong="G1905" Jesus|strong="G0846" about|strong="G1519" what|strong="G3588" he|strong="G2532" had|strong="G3588" told the|strong="G3588" people|strong="G3793".
18 He|strong="G2532" said|strong="G3004", “Do|strong="G1510" you|strong="G5210" still have|strong="G1510" trouble understanding|strong="G0801"? Surely you|strong="G5210" know that|strong="G3754" nothing|strong="G3756" that|strong="G3754" enters|strong="G1531" the|strong="G3956" mouth from|strong="G0444" the|strong="G3956" outside|strong="G1855" can|strong="G1410" make|strong="G3756" people|strong="G0444" unacceptable to|strong="G1519" God|strong="G0846".
19 Food|strong="G1033" does not|strong="G3756" go|strong="G1607" into|strong="G1519" a|strong="G2532" person’s mind|strong="G2588". It|strong="G0846" goes|strong="G1531" into|strong="G1519" the|strong="G3956" stomach|strong="G2836". Then|strong="G2532" it|strong="G0846" goes|strong="G1531" out|strong="G1607" of|strong="G3956" the|strong="G3956" body|strong="G1519".” (When|strong="G2532" Jesus|strong="G0846" said|strong="G2532" this|strong="G3588", he|strong="G2532" meant there is|strong="G3588" no|strong="G3756" food|strong="G1033" that|strong="G3754" is|strong="G3588" wrong for|strong="G1519" people|strong="G3956" to|strong="G1519" eat.)
20 And|strong="G1161" Jesus|strong="G3004" said|strong="G3004", “The|strong="G3588" things|strong="G3588" that|strong="G3754" make people|strong="G0444" wrong are|strong="G3588" the|strong="G3588" things|strong="G3588" that|strong="G3754" come|strong="G1607" from|strong="G1537" the|strong="G3588" inside.
21 All|strong="G3588" these|strong="G3588" bad|strong="G2556" things|strong="G2556" begin inside|strong="G2081" a|strong="G1607" person|strong="G0444", in|strong="G1537" the|strong="G3588" mind|strong="G2588": bad|strong="G2556" thoughts|strong="G1261", sexual|strong="G4202" sins, stealing, murder|strong="G5408",
22 adultery|strong="G3430", greed|strong="G4124", doing bad|strong="G4190" things|strong="G4190" to|strong="G3788" people, lying, doing things|strong="G4190" that are morally wrong, jealousy, insulting people, proud talking, and|strong="G3788" foolish living.
23 These|strong="G3778" evil|strong="G4190" things|strong="G3778" come|strong="G1607" from|strong="G0444" inside|strong="G2081" a|strong="G2532" person|strong="G0444". And|strong="G2532" these|strong="G3778" are|strong="G3956" the|strong="G3956" things|strong="G3778" that|strong="G3778" make people|strong="G0444" unacceptable to|strong="G2532" God.”
24 Jesus|strong="G1525" went|strong="G0565" from|strong="G2532" there|strong="G1564" to|strong="G1519" the|strong="G3588" area|strong="G3725" around Tyre|strong="G5184". He|strong="G2532" did|strong="G1097" not|strong="G3756" want|strong="G2309" the|strong="G3588" people|strong="G3588" in|strong="G1519" that|strong="G1097" area|strong="G3725" to|strong="G1519" know|strong="G1097" he|strong="G2532" was|strong="G3588" there|strong="G1564", so|strong="G2532" he|strong="G2532" went|strong="G0565" into|strong="G1519" a|strong="G1525" house|strong="G3614". But|strong="G1161" he|strong="G2532" could|strong="G1410" not|strong="G3756" stay hidden.
25 A|strong="G2192" woman|strong="G1135" heard|strong="G0191" that|strong="G3739" he|strong="G0846" was|strong="G3739" there|strong="G2112". Her|strong="G0846" little|strong="G2365" daughter|strong="G2365" had|strong="G2192" an|strong="G2192" evil spirit|strong="G4151" inside her|strong="G0846". So|strong="G4314" the|strong="G3588" woman|strong="G1135" came|strong="G2064" to|strong="G4314" Jesus|strong="G0846" and|strong="G2064" bowed down|strong="G4363" near|strong="G4314" his|strong="G0846" feet|strong="G4228".

She|strong="G0846" was|strong="G1510" born in|strong="G2532" Phoenicia, an|strong="G1510" area in|strong="G2532" Syria. She|strong="G0846" begged|strong="G2065" Jesus|strong="G0846" to|strong="G2443" force the|strong="G3588" demon|strong="G1140" out|strong="G1537" of|strong="G1537" her|strong="G0846" daughter|strong="G2364".
27 Jesus|strong="G0846" told|strong="G3004" the|strong="G3588" woman, “It|strong="G0846" is|strong="G1510" not|strong="G3756" right|strong="G2570" to|strong="G3004" take|strong="G2983" the|strong="G3588" children’s|strong="G5043" bread|strong="G0740" and|strong="G2532" give|strong="G3004" it|strong="G0846" to|strong="G3004" the|strong="G3588" dogs|strong="G2952". First|strong="G4413" let|strong="G0863" the|strong="G3588" children|strong="G5043" eat all|strong="G3588" they|strong="G0846" want.”
28 She|strong="G0846" answered|strong="G0611", “That|strong="G3004" is|strong="G2962" true, Lord|strong="G2962". But|strong="G1161" the|strong="G3588" dogs|strong="G2952" under|strong="G5270" the|strong="G3588" table|strong="G5132" can|strong="G3004" eat|strong="G2068" the|strong="G3588" pieces of|strong="G0575" food|strong="G5132" that|strong="G3004" the|strong="G3588" children|strong="G3813" don’t eat|strong="G2068".”
29 Then|strong="G2532" he|strong="G2532" told|strong="G3004" her|strong="G0846", “That|strong="G3004" is|strong="G3778" a|strong="G3004" very|strong="G0846" good answer|strong="G3056". You|strong="G4771" may|strong="G2532" go|strong="G5217". The|strong="G3588" demon|strong="G1140" has|strong="G3778" left|strong="G1831" your|strong="G2532" daughter|strong="G2364".”
30 The|strong="G3588" woman went|strong="G1831" home|strong="G3624" and|strong="G2532" found|strong="G2147" her|strong="G0846" daughter lying|strong="G0906" on|strong="G1909" the|strong="G3588" bed|strong="G2825". The|strong="G3588" demon|strong="G1140" was|strong="G3588" gone|strong="G1831".
31 Then|strong="G2532" Jesus|strong="G1831" left|strong="G1831" the|strong="G3588" area|strong="G3725" around Tyre|strong="G5184" and|strong="G2532" went|strong="G1831" through|strong="G1223" Sidon|strong="G4605". On|strong="G1519" his|strong="G1223" way|strong="G1223" to|strong="G1519" Lake|strong="G2281" Galilee|strong="G1056" he|strong="G2532" went|strong="G1831" through|strong="G1223" the|strong="G3588" area|strong="G3725" of|strong="G1537" the|strong="G3588" Ten Towns.

The|strong="G3588" people|strong="G0846" begged|strong="G3870" Jesus|strong="G0846" to|strong="G2443" put|strong="G2007" his|strong="G0846" hand|strong="G5495" on|strong="G5495" the|strong="G3588" man|strong="G2974" to|strong="G2443" heal him|strong="G0846".
33 Jesus|strong="G0846" led the|strong="G3588" man away|strong="G0575" from|strong="G0575" the|strong="G3588" people|strong="G3793" to|strong="G1519" be|strong="G2532" alone|strong="G0846" with|strong="G2596" him|strong="G0846". He|strong="G2532" put|strong="G0906" his|strong="G0846" fingers|strong="G1147" in|strong="G1519" the|strong="G3588" man’s ears|strong="G3775". 34 Jesus|strong="G0846" looked|strong="G0308" up|strong="G1519" to|strong="G1519" the|strong="G3588" sky|strong="G3772" and|strong="G2532" with|strong="G2532" a|strong="G1510" loud sigh|strong="G4727" he|strong="G2532" said|strong="G3004", “\+w Ephphatha|strong="G2188"\+w*!” (This|strong="G3588" means|strong="G1510" “Open!”)
35 As|strong="G2532" soon as|strong="G2532" Jesus|strong="G0846" did this|strong="G3588", the|strong="G3588" man was|strong="G3588" able to|strong="G2532" hear. He|strong="G2532" was|strong="G3588" able to|strong="G2532" use his|strong="G0846" tongue|strong="G1100", and|strong="G2532" he|strong="G2532" began to|strong="G2532" speak|strong="G2980" clearly.
36 Jesus|strong="G0846" told|strong="G3004" the|strong="G2532" people|strong="G0846" not|strong="G3367" to|strong="G2443" tell|strong="G3004" anyone|strong="G3367" about|strong="G2532" this|strong="G0846".
