The|strong="G3588" leading priests|strong="G0749", teachers of|strong="G2250" the|strong="G3588" law, and|strong="G2532" older|strong="G4245" Jewish leaders came|strong="G1096" to|strong="G2532" talk to|strong="G2532" Jesus|strong="G0846".
2 They|strong="G0846" said|strong="G3004", “Tell|strong="G3004" us|strong="G1325" what|strong="G5101" authority|strong="G1849" you|strong="G4771" have|strong="G1510" to|strong="G4314" do|strong="G4160" these|strong="G3778" things|strong="G3778". Who|strong="G3588" gave|strong="G1325" you|strong="G4771" this|strong="G3778" authority|strong="G1849"?”
3 Jesus|strong="G0846" answered|strong="G0611", “I|strong="G1473" will|strong="G2532" ask|strong="G2065" you|strong="G5210" a|strong="G3004" question|strong="G2065" too|strong="G2532". Tell|strong="G3004" me|strong="G3004":
4 When|strong="G1510" John|strong="G2491" baptized people|strong="G0444", did|strong="G1510" his|strong="G2491" authority come|strong="G1510" from|strong="G1537" God or|strong="G2228" was|strong="G1510" it|strong="G1510" only from|strong="G1537" other|strong="G2228" people|strong="G0444"?”
5 The|strong="G3588" priests, the|strong="G3588" teachers of|strong="G1537" the|strong="G3588" law, and|strong="G1161" the|strong="G3588" Jewish leaders|strong="G3004" all|strong="G3588" talked about|strong="G4314" this|strong="G3588". They|strong="G0846" said|strong="G3004" to|strong="G4314" each|strong="G1438" other|strong="G1161", “If|strong="G1437" we|strong="G1437" answer, ‘John’s|strong="G0846" baptism was|strong="G3588" from|strong="G1537" God|strong="G0846",’ then|strong="G1161" he|strong="G0846" will|strong="G5101" say|strong="G3004", ‘Then|strong="G1161" why|strong="G5101" did|strong="G5101" you|strong="G1437" not|strong="G3756" believe|strong="G4100" John|strong="G0846"?’
6 But|strong="G1161" if|strong="G1437" we|strong="G2249" say|strong="G3004" that|strong="G3004" John’s|strong="G2491" baptism was|strong="G1510" from|strong="G1537" someone|strong="G0444" else, the|strong="G3588" people|strong="G2992" will|strong="G1510" stone|strong="G2642" us|strong="G3004" to|strong="G3004" death|strong="G2642". They|strong="G1161" all|strong="G0537" believe|strong="G3982" that|strong="G3004" John|strong="G2491" was|strong="G1510" a|strong="G1510" prophet|strong="G4396".”
7 So|strong="G2532" they|strong="G2532" answered|strong="G0611", “We|strong="G2532" don’t|strong="G3361" know|strong="G1492" the|strong="G2532" answer|strong="G0611".”
8 So|strong="G2532" Jesus|strong="G2424" said|strong="G3004" to|strong="G3004" them|strong="G0846", “Then|strong="G2532" I|strong="G1473" will|strong="G3778" not|strong="G3761" tell|strong="G3004" you|strong="G5210" who|strong="G3588" gave|strong="G4160" me|strong="G3004" the|strong="G3588" authority|strong="G1849" to|strong="G3004" do|strong="G4160" these|strong="G3778" things|strong="G3778".”
9 Then|strong="G2532" Jesus|strong="G0846" told|strong="G3004" the|strong="G3588" people|strong="G2992" this|strong="G3778" story: “A|strong="G3004" man|strong="G0444" planted|strong="G5452" a|strong="G3004" vineyard|strong="G0290". He|strong="G2532" leased|strong="G1554" the|strong="G3588" land to|strong="G4314" some|strong="G3588" farmers. Then|strong="G2532" he|strong="G2532" went|strong="G0589" away for|strong="G4314" a|strong="G3004" long|strong="G5550" time|strong="G5550".
10 Later, it|strong="G0846" was|strong="G3588" time|strong="G2540" for|strong="G4314" the|strong="G3588" grapes to|strong="G4314" be|strong="G2532" picked. So|strong="G2443" the|strong="G3588" man sent|strong="G0649" a|strong="G1325" servant|strong="G1401" to|strong="G4314" those|strong="G3588" farmers so|strong="G2443" that|strong="G2443" they|strong="G0846" would|strong="G0846" give|strong="G1325" him|strong="G0846" his|strong="G0846" share of|strong="G0575" the|strong="G3588" grapes. But|strong="G1161" they|strong="G0846" beat|strong="G1194" the|strong="G3588" servant|strong="G1401" and|strong="G2532" sent|strong="G0649" him|strong="G0846" away|strong="G1821" with|strong="G4314" nothing.
11 So|strong="G2532" the|strong="G3588" man|strong="G2087" sent|strong="G3992" another|strong="G2087" servant|strong="G1401". They|strong="G2532" beat|strong="G1194" this|strong="G3588" servant|strong="G1401" too|strong="G2532" and|strong="G2532" showed no respect for|strong="G2532" him|strong="G2532". They|strong="G2532" sent|strong="G3992" the|strong="G3588" servant|strong="G1401" away|strong="G1821" with|strong="G2532" nothing.
12 So|strong="G2532" the|strong="G3588" man|strong="G3778" sent|strong="G3992" a|strong="G2532" third|strong="G5154" servant to|strong="G2532" the|strong="G3588" farmers. They|strong="G2532" hurt this|strong="G3778" servant badly and|strong="G2532" threw|strong="G1544" him|strong="G2532" out|strong="G1544".
13 “The|strong="G3588" owner|strong="G2962" of|strong="G5207" the|strong="G3588" vineyard|strong="G0290" said|strong="G3004", ‘What|strong="G5101" will|strong="G5101" I|strong="G1473" do|strong="G4160" now|strong="G1161"? I|strong="G1473" will|strong="G5101" send|strong="G3992" my|strong="G1788" son|strong="G5207". I|strong="G1473" love|strong="G0027" my|strong="G1788" son|strong="G5207" very|strong="G3778" much. Maybe the|strong="G3588" farmers will|strong="G5101" respect|strong="G1788" my|strong="G1788" son|strong="G5207".’
14 When|strong="G1161" the|strong="G3588" farmers saw|strong="G3708" the|strong="G3588" son, they|strong="G0846" said|strong="G3004" to|strong="G4314" each|strong="G0240" other|strong="G1161", ‘This|strong="G3778" is|strong="G1510" the|strong="G3588" owner’s son. This|strong="G3778" vineyard will|strong="G1510" be|strong="G1510" his|strong="G0846". If|strong="G2443" we|strong="G2249" kill|strong="G0615" him|strong="G0846", it|strong="G0846" will|strong="G1510" be|strong="G1510" ours|strong="G1473".’
15 So|strong="G3767" the|strong="G3588" farmers threw|strong="G1544" the|strong="G3588" son out|strong="G1854" of|strong="G2962" the|strong="G3588" vineyard|strong="G0290" and|strong="G2532" killed|strong="G0615" him|strong="G0846".
16 He|strong="G2532" will|strong="G3778" come|strong="G2064" and|strong="G2532" kill those|strong="G3588" farmers. Then|strong="G2532" he|strong="G2532" will|strong="G3778" lease the|strong="G3588" land to|strong="G3004" some|strong="G3588" other|strong="G0243" farmers.”
17 But|strong="G1161" Jesus|strong="G0846" looked|strong="G1689" into|strong="G1519" their|strong="G0846" eyes and|strong="G1161" said|strong="G3004", “Then|strong="G3767" what|strong="G5101" does|strong="G1510" this|strong="G3778" verse mean|strong="G3004":
18 Everyone|strong="G3956" who|strong="G3739" falls|strong="G4098" on|strong="G1909" that|strong="G3739" stone|strong="G3037" will|strong="G3739" be|strong="G3956" broken|strong="G4917". If|strong="G0302" that|strong="G3739" stone|strong="G3037" falls|strong="G4098" on|strong="G1909" you|strong="G3739", it|strong="G0846" will|strong="G3739" crush you|strong="G3739"!”
19 When|strong="G2532" the|strong="G3588" teachers of|strong="G1909" the|strong="G3588" law and|strong="G2532" the|strong="G3588" leading priests|strong="G0749" heard|strong="G1097" this|strong="G3778" story, they|strong="G0846" knew|strong="G1097" it|strong="G0846" was|strong="G3588" about|strong="G1909" them|strong="G0846". So|strong="G2532" they|strong="G0846" wanted|strong="G2212" to|strong="G4314" arrest Jesus|strong="G0846" right then|strong="G2532", but|strong="G2532" they|strong="G0846" were|strong="G2992" afraid|strong="G5399" of|strong="G1909" what|strong="G3588" the|strong="G3588" people|strong="G2992" would|strong="G0846" do|strong="G5399".
20 So|strong="G2443" the|strong="G3588" Jewish leaders|strong="G0649" waited for|strong="G2443" the|strong="G3588" right|strong="G1849" time to|strong="G2443" get Jesus|strong="G0846". They|strong="G0846" sent|strong="G0649" some|strong="G3588" men|strong="G1342" to|strong="G2443" him|strong="G0846", who|strong="G3588" pretended|strong="G5271" to|strong="G2443" be|strong="G1510" sincere. They|strong="G0846" wanted to|strong="G2443" find something|strong="G1510" wrong with|strong="G2532" what|strong="G3588" Jesus|strong="G0846" said|strong="G3056". (If|strong="G2443" they|strong="G0846" found|strong="G1510" something|strong="G1510" wrong, then|strong="G2532" they|strong="G0846" could hand|strong="G3860" him|strong="G0846" over|strong="G3860" to|strong="G2443" the|strong="G3588" governor|strong="G2232", who|strong="G3588" had|strong="G1510" the|strong="G3588" authority|strong="G1849" to|strong="G2443" arrest him|strong="G0846".)
21 So|strong="G2532" the|strong="G3588" men|strong="G0846" said|strong="G3004" to|strong="G3004" Jesus|strong="G0846", “Teacher|strong="G1320", we|strong="G2532" know|strong="G1492" that|strong="G3754" what|strong="G3588" you|strong="G3754" say|strong="G3004" and|strong="G2532" teach|strong="G1321" is|strong="G2316" true|strong="G0225". It|strong="G0846" doesn’t|strong="G3756" matter who|strong="G3588" is|strong="G2316" listening—you|strong="G3754" teach|strong="G1321" the|strong="G3588" same|strong="G0846" to|strong="G3004" all|strong="G3588" people|strong="G0846". You|strong="G3754" always teach|strong="G1321" the|strong="G3588" truth|strong="G0225" about|strong="G1909" God’s|strong="G2316" way|strong="G3598".
22 Tell us|strong="G1325", is|strong="G1832" it right for|strong="G2228" us|strong="G1325" to|strong="G1325" pay|strong="G1325" taxes|strong="G5411" to|strong="G1325" Caesar|strong="G2541" or|strong="G2228" not|strong="G3756"?”
23 But|strong="G1161" Jesus|strong="G0846" knew that|strong="G3004" these|strong="G3588" men|strong="G0846" were|strong="G3588" trying to|strong="G4314" trick him|strong="G0846". He|strong="G0846" said|strong="G3004" to|strong="G4314" them|strong="G0846",
24 “Show|strong="G1166" me|strong="G3004" a|strong="G2192" silver coin. Whose|strong="G5101" name and|strong="G2532" picture are|strong="G3588" on|strong="G1161" it|strong="G1161"?”
25 He|strong="G2532" said|strong="G3004" to|strong="G4314" them|strong="G0846", “Then|strong="G2532" give|strong="G0591" to|strong="G4314" Caesar|strong="G2541" what|strong="G3588" belongs to|strong="G4314" Caesar|strong="G2541", and|strong="G2532" give|strong="G0591" to|strong="G4314" God|strong="G2316" what|strong="G3588" belongs to|strong="G4314" God|strong="G2316".”
26 The|strong="G3588" men|strong="G0846" were|strong="G2992" amazed|strong="G2296" at|strong="G1909" his|strong="G0846" wise answer|strong="G0612". They|strong="G0846" could|strong="G2480" say|strong="G4487" nothing|strong="G3756". They|strong="G0846" were|strong="G2992" not|strong="G3756" able|strong="G2480" to|strong="G1909" trick Jesus|strong="G0846" there in|strong="G1909" front of|strong="G1909" the|strong="G3588" people|strong="G2992". He|strong="G2532" said|strong="G2532" nothing|strong="G3756" they|strong="G0846" could|strong="G2480" use against|strong="G1909" him|strong="G0846".
27 Some|strong="G5100" Sadducees|strong="G4523" came|strong="G4334" to|strong="G4334" Jesus|strong="G0846". (Sadducees|strong="G4523" believe that|strong="G0846" people|strong="G0846" will|strong="G1510" not|strong="G3361" rise|strong="G0386" from|strong="G3361" death.) They|strong="G0846" asked|strong="G1905" him|strong="G0846",
28 “Teacher|strong="G1320", Moses|strong="G3475" wrote|strong="G1125" that|strong="G2443" if|strong="G1437" a|strong="G2192" married|strong="G2983" man|strong="G3778" dies|strong="G0599" and|strong="G2532" had|strong="G2192" no children|strong="G4690", his|strong="G0846" brother|strong="G0080" must|strong="G1135" marry|strong="G2983" his|strong="G0846" widow. Then|strong="G2532" they|strong="G0846" will|strong="G1510" have|strong="G2192" children|strong="G4690" for|strong="G2443" the|strong="G3588" dead|strong="G0599" brother|strong="G0080".
29 One|strong="G3588" time|strong="G4413" there|strong="G1510" were|strong="G1510" seven|strong="G2033" brothers|strong="G0080". The|strong="G3588" first|strong="G4413" brother|strong="G0080" married|strong="G2983" a|strong="G2983" woman|strong="G1135" but|strong="G2532" died|strong="G0599". He|strong="G2532" had|strong="G1510" no children.
30 Then|strong="G2532" the|strong="G3588" second|strong="G1208" brother married the|strong="G3588" woman, and|strong="G2532" he|strong="G2532" died.
31 And|strong="G2532" the|strong="G3588" third|strong="G5154" brother married|strong="G2983" the|strong="G3588" woman, and|strong="G2532" he|strong="G2532" died|strong="G0599". The|strong="G3588" same|strong="G0846" thing|strong="G5615" happened|strong="G3588" with|strong="G2532" all|strong="G3588" the|strong="G3588" other|strong="G1161" brothers. They|strong="G0846" all|strong="G3588" died|strong="G0599" and|strong="G2532" had|strong="G3588" no|strong="G3756" children|strong="G5043".
32 The|strong="G3588" woman|strong="G1135" was|strong="G3588" the|strong="G3588" last|strong="G5305" to|strong="G2532" die|strong="G0599".
33 But|strong="G1063" all|strong="G3588" seven|strong="G2033" brothers married|strong="G1135" her|strong="G0846". So|strong="G3767" when|strong="G1722" people|strong="G0846" rise|strong="G0386" from|strong="G1722" death, whose|strong="G5101" wife|strong="G1135" will|strong="G5101" this|strong="G3588" woman|strong="G1135" be|strong="G1096"?”
34 Jesus|strong="G2424" said|strong="G3004" to|strong="G3004" the|strong="G3588" Sadducees, “On|strong="G0846" earth, people|strong="G0846" marry|strong="G1060" each other|strong="G0846".
35 Some|strong="G1537" people|strong="G3588" will|strong="G2532" be|strong="G2532" worthy|strong="G2661" to|strong="G2532" be|strong="G2532" raised from|strong="G1537" death|strong="G3498" and|strong="G2532" live again|strong="G2532" after|strong="G1161" this|strong="G3588" life. In|strong="G2532" that|strong="G1565" life they|strong="G2532" will|strong="G2532" not|strong="G2532" marry|strong="G1060".
36 In|strong="G2316" that|strong="G2316" life people|strong="G1510" are|strong="G1510" like|strong="G2465" angels|strong="G2465" and|strong="G2532" cannot|strong="G1410" die|strong="G0599". They|strong="G2532" are|strong="G1510" children of|strong="G5207" God|strong="G2316", because|strong="G1063" they|strong="G2532" have|strong="G1510" been|strong="G1510" raised from|strong="G2532" death|strong="G0599".
37 Moses|strong="G3475" clearly showed|strong="G3377" that|strong="G3754" people|strong="G3588" are|strong="G3588" raised|strong="G1453" from|strong="G2532" death|strong="G3498". Yes|strong="G1063", to|strong="G0846" God|strong="G2316" they|strong="G0846" are|strong="G1510" all|strong="G3956" still living|strong="G2198".”
39 Some|strong="G5100" of|strong="G5100" the|strong="G3588" teachers|strong="G1320" of|strong="G5100" the|strong="G3588" law said|strong="G3004", “Teacher|strong="G1320", your|strong="G1161" answer|strong="G0611" was|strong="G3588" very|strong="G2573" good|strong="G2573".”
40 No|strong="G3762" one|strong="G3762" was|strong="G3762" brave enough to|strong="G0846" ask|strong="G1905" him|strong="G0846" another|strong="G3765" question|strong="G1905".

They|strong="G2532" like|strong="G2309" to|strong="G2309" walk|strong="G4043" around|strong="G4043" wearing clothes that|strong="G2309" look important. And|strong="G2532" they|strong="G2532" love|strong="G5368" for|strong="G1722" people|strong="G3588" to|strong="G2309" show respect to|strong="G2309" them|strong="G1722" in|strong="G1722" the|strong="G3588" marketplaces. They|strong="G2532" love|strong="G5368" to|strong="G2309" have|strong="G2532" the|strong="G3588" most important seats|strong="G4410" in|strong="G1722" the|strong="G3588" synagogues|strong="G4864" and|strong="G2532" the|strong="G3588" places|strong="G0058" of|strong="G0575" honor|strong="G4411" at|strong="G1722" banquets|strong="G1173".
47 But|strong="G2532" they|strong="G3739" cheat widows|strong="G5503" and|strong="G2532" take|strong="G2983" their|strong="G2532" homes. Then|strong="G2532" they|strong="G3739" try to|strong="G2532" make|strong="G4336" themselves look good by|strong="G2532" saying long|strong="G3117" prayers|strong="G4336". God will|strong="G3739" punish them|strong="G3739" very|strong="G3778" much.”
