1 But the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" committed|strong="H4603" a trespass|strong="H4604" in the accursed thing|strong="H2764": for Achan|strong="H5912", the son|strong="H1121" of Carmi|strong="H3756", the son|strong="H1121" of Zabdi|strong="H2067", the son|strong="H1121" of Zerah|strong="H2226", of the tribe|strong="H4294" of Judah|strong="H3063", took|strong="H3947" of the accursed thing|strong="H2764": and the anger|strong="H0639" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* was kindled|strong="H2734" against the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478".
2 And Joshua|strong="H3091" sent|strong="H7971" men|strong="H0582" from Jericho|strong="H3405" to Ai|strong="H5857", which is beside|strong="H5973" Beth-aven|strong="H1007", on the east side|strong="H6924" of Beth-el|strong="H1008", and spake|strong="H0559" unto them, saying|strong="H0559", Go up|strong="H5927" and view|strong="H7270" the country|strong="H0776". And the men|strong="H0582" went up|strong="H5927" and viewed|strong="H7270" Ai|strong="H5857".
3 And they returned|strong="H7725" to Joshua|strong="H3091", and said|strong="H0559" unto him, Let not all the people|strong="H5971" go up|strong="H5927"; but let about two or three|strong="H7969" thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376" go up|strong="H5927" and smite|strong="H5221" Ai|strong="H5857"; and make not all the people|strong="H5971" to labour|strong="H3021" thither; for they are but few|strong="H4592".
4 So there went up|strong="H5927" thither of the people|strong="H5971" about three|strong="H7969" thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376": and they fled|strong="H5127" before|strong="H6440" the men|strong="H0582" of Ai|strong="H5857".
5 And the men|strong="H0582" of Ai|strong="H5857" smote|strong="H5221" of them about thirty|strong="H7970" and six|strong="H8337" men|strong="H0376": for they chased|strong="H7291" them from before|strong="H6440" the gate|strong="H8179" even unto Shebarim|strong="H7671", and smote|strong="H5221" them in the going down|strong="H4174": wherefore the hearts|strong="H3824" of the people|strong="H5971" melted|strong="H4549", and became as water|strong="H4325".
6 And Joshua|strong="H3091" rent|strong="H7167" his clothes|strong="H8071", and fell|strong="H5307" to the earth|strong="H0776" upon his face|strong="H6440" before|strong="H6440" the ark|strong="H0727" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* until the eventide|strong="H6153", he and the elders|strong="H2205" of Israel|strong="H3478", and put|strong="H5927" dust|strong="H6083" upon their heads|strong="H7218".
7 And Joshua|strong="H3091" said|strong="H0559", Alas, O|strong="H0162" Lord|strong="H0136" \+w GOD|strong="H3069"\+w*, wherefore hast thou at all|strong="H5674" brought|strong="H5674" this people|strong="H5971" over|strong="H5674" Jordan|strong="H3383", to deliver|strong="H5414" us into the hand|strong="H3027" of the Amorites|strong="H0567", to destroy|strong="H0006" us? would to God|strong="H3863" we had been content|strong="H2974", and dwelt|strong="H3427" on the other side|strong="H5676" Jordan|strong="H3383"!
8 O|strong="H0994" Lord|strong="H0136", what shall I say|strong="H0559", when|strong="H0310" Israel|strong="H3478" turneth|strong="H2015" their backs|strong="H6203" before|strong="H6440" their enemies|strong="H0341"!
9 For the Canaanites|strong="H3669" and all the inhabitants|strong="H3427" of the land|strong="H0776" shall hear|strong="H8085" of it, and shall environ us round|strong="H5437", and cut off|strong="H3772" our name|strong="H8034" from the earth|strong="H0776": and what wilt thou do|strong="H6213" unto thy great|strong="H1419" name|strong="H8034"?
10 And the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* said|strong="H0559" unto Joshua|strong="H3091", Get thee up|strong="H6965"; wherefore liest|strong="H5307" thou thus upon thy face|strong="H6440"?
11 Israel|strong="H3478" hath sinned|strong="H2398", and they have also transgressed|strong="H5674" my covenant|strong="H1285" which I commanded|strong="H6680" them: for they have even taken|strong="H3947" of the accursed thing|strong="H2764", and have also stolen|strong="H1589", and dissembled|strong="H3584" also, and they have put|strong="H7760" it even among their own stuff|strong="H3627".
12 Therefore the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" could|strong="H3201" not stand|strong="H6965" before|strong="H6440" their enemies|strong="H0341", but turned|strong="H6437" their backs|strong="H6203" before|strong="H6440" their enemies|strong="H0341", because they were accursed|strong="H2764": neither will I be with you any more|strong="H3254", except|strong="H3808" ye destroy|strong="H8045" the accursed|strong="H2764" from among|strong="H7130" you.
13 Up|strong="H6965", sanctify|strong="H6942" the people|strong="H5971", and say|strong="H0559", Sanctify|strong="H6942" yourselves against to morrow|strong="H4279": for thus saith|strong="H0559" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* God|strong="H0430" of Israel|strong="H3478", There is an accursed thing|strong="H2764" in the midst|strong="H7130" of thee, O Israel|strong="H3478": thou canst|strong="H3201" not stand|strong="H6965" before|strong="H6440" thine enemies|strong="H0341", until ye take away|strong="H5493" the accursed thing|strong="H2764" from among|strong="H7130" you.
14 In the morning|strong="H1242" therefore ye shall be brought|strong="H7126" according to your tribes|strong="H7626": and it shall be, that the tribe|strong="H7626" which the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* taketh|strong="H3920" shall come|strong="H7126" according to the families|strong="H4940" thereof; and the family|strong="H4940" which the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* shall take|strong="H3920" shall come|strong="H7126" by households|strong="H1004"; and the household|strong="H1004" which the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* shall take|strong="H3920" shall come|strong="H7126" man|strong="H1397" by man|strong="H1397".
15 And it shall be, that he that is taken|strong="H3920" with the accursed thing|strong="H2764" shall be burnt|strong="H8313" with fire|strong="H0784", he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed|strong="H5674" the covenant|strong="H1285" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and because he hath wrought|strong="H6213" folly|strong="H5039" in Israel|strong="H3478".
16 So Joshua|strong="H3091" rose up early|strong="H7925" in the morning|strong="H1242", and brought|strong="H7126" Israel|strong="H3478" by their tribes|strong="H7626"; and the tribe|strong="H7626" of Judah|strong="H3063" was taken|strong="H3920":
17 And he brought|strong="H7126" the family|strong="H4940" of Judah|strong="H3063"; and he took|strong="H3920" the family|strong="H4940" of the Zarhites|strong="H2227": and he brought|strong="H7126" the family|strong="H4940" of the Zarhites|strong="H2227" man|strong="H1397" by man|strong="H1397"; and Zabdi|strong="H2067" was taken|strong="H3920":
18 And he brought|strong="H7126" his household|strong="H1004" man|strong="H1397" by man|strong="H1397"; and Achan|strong="H5912", the son|strong="H1121" of Carmi|strong="H3756", the son|strong="H1121" of Zabdi|strong="H2067", the son|strong="H1121" of Zerah|strong="H2226", of the tribe|strong="H4294" of Judah|strong="H3063", was taken|strong="H3920".
19 And Joshua|strong="H3091" said|strong="H0559" unto Achan|strong="H5912", My son|strong="H1121", give|strong="H7760", I pray thee, glory|strong="H3519" to the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* God|strong="H0430" of Israel|strong="H3478", and make|strong="H5414" confession|strong="H8426" unto him; and tell|strong="H5046" me now what thou hast done|strong="H6213"; hide|strong="H3582" it not from me.
20 And Achan|strong="H5912" answered|strong="H6030" Joshua|strong="H3091", and said|strong="H0559", Indeed|strong="H0546" I have sinned|strong="H2398" against the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* God|strong="H0430" of Israel|strong="H3478", and thus and thus have I done|strong="H6213":
21 When I saw|strong="H7200" among the spoils|strong="H7998" a|strong="H0259" goodly|strong="H2896" Babylonish|strong="H8152" garment|strong="H0155", and two hundred|strong="H3967" shekels|strong="H8255" of silver|strong="H3701", and a|strong="H0259" wedge|strong="H3956" of gold|strong="H2091" of fifty|strong="H2572" shekels|strong="H8255" weight|strong="H4948", then I coveted|strong="H2530" them, and took|strong="H3947" them; and, behold, they are hid|strong="H2934" in the earth|strong="H0776" in the midst|strong="H8432" of my tent|strong="H0168", and the silver|strong="H3701" under it.
22 So Joshua|strong="H3091" sent|strong="H7971" messengers|strong="H4397", and they ran|strong="H7323" unto the tent|strong="H0168"; and, behold, it was hid|strong="H2934" in his tent|strong="H0168", and the silver|strong="H3701" under it.
23 And they took|strong="H3947" them out of the midst|strong="H8432" of the tent|strong="H0168", and brought|strong="H0935" them unto Joshua|strong="H3091", and unto all the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478", and laid them out|strong="H3332" before|strong="H6440" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*.
24 And Joshua|strong="H3091", and all Israel|strong="H3478" with him, took|strong="H3947" Achan|strong="H5912" the son|strong="H1121" of Zerah|strong="H2226", and the silver|strong="H3701", and the garment|strong="H0155", and the wedge|strong="H3956" of gold|strong="H2091", and his sons|strong="H1121", and his daughters|strong="H1323", and his oxen|strong="H7794", and his asses|strong="H2543", and his sheep|strong="H6629", and his tent|strong="H0168", and all that he had: and they brought|strong="H5927" them unto the valley|strong="H6010" of Achor|strong="H5911".
25 And Joshua|strong="H3091" said|strong="H0559", Why|strong="H4100" hast thou troubled|strong="H5916" us? the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* shall trouble|strong="H5916" thee this day|strong="H3117". And all Israel|strong="H3478" stoned|strong="H7275" him with stones|strong="H0068", and burned|strong="H8313" them with fire|strong="H0784", after they had stoned|strong="H5619" them with stones|strong="H0068".
26 And they raised|strong="H6965" over him a great|strong="H1419" heap|strong="H1530" of stones|strong="H0068" unto this day|strong="H3117". So the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* turned|strong="H7725" from the fierceness|strong="H2740" of his anger|strong="H0639". Wherefore the name|strong="H8034" of that place|strong="H4725" was called|strong="H7121", The valley|strong="H6010" of Achor|strong="H5911", unto this day|strong="H3117".
