2 Then|strong="H0116" rose up|strong="H6966" Zerubbabel|strong="H2217" the son|strong="H1247" of Shealtiel|strong="H7598", and Jeshua|strong="H3443" the son|strong="H1247" of Jozadak|strong="H3136", and began|strong="H8271" to build|strong="H1124" the house|strong="H1005" of God|strong="H0426" which is at Jerusalem|strong="H3390": and with them|strong="H5974" were the prophets|strong="H5029" of God|strong="H0426" helping|strong="H5583" them.
3 At the same time|strong="H2166" came|strong="H0858" to them Tatnai|strong="H8674", governor|strong="H6347" on this side|strong="H5675" the river|strong="H5103", and Shethar-boznai|strong="H8370", and their companions|strong="H3675", and said|strong="H0560" thus|strong="H3652" unto them|strong="H5922", Who|strong="H4479" hath commanded|strong="H7761" you to build|strong="H1124" this|strong="H1836" house|strong="H1005", and to make up|strong="H3635" this|strong="H1836" wall|strong="H0846"?
4 Then|strong="H0116" said|strong="H0560" we unto them after this manner|strong="H3660", What|strong="H4479" are|strong="H0581" the names|strong="H8036" of the men|strong="H1400" that make|strong="H1124" this|strong="H1836" building|strong="H1147"?
5 But the eye|strong="H5870" of their God|strong="H0426" was|strong="H1934" upon|strong="H5922" the elders|strong="H7868" of the Jews|strong="H3062", that they could not|strong="H3809" cause|strong="H0989" them|strong="H1994" to cease|strong="H0989", till|strong="H5705" the matter|strong="H2941" came|strong="H1946" to Darius|strong="H1868": and then|strong="H0116" they returned answer|strong="H8421" by letter|strong="H5407" concerning|strong="H5922" this|strong="H1836" matter.
6 The copy|strong="H6573" of the letter|strong="H0104" that Tatnai|strong="H8674", governor|strong="H6347" on this side|strong="H5675" the river|strong="H5103", and Shethar-boznai|strong="H8370", and his companions|strong="H3675" the Apharsachites|strong="H0671", which were on this side|strong="H5675" the river|strong="H5103", sent|strong="H7972" unto|strong="H5922" Darius|strong="H1868" the king|strong="H4430":
7 They sent|strong="H7972" a letter|strong="H6600" unto|strong="H5922" him, wherein|strong="H1459" was written|strong="H3790" thus|strong="H1836"; Unto Darius|strong="H1868" the king|strong="H4430", all|strong="H3606" peace|strong="H8001".
8 Be it known|strong="H1934" unto the king|strong="H4430", that we went|strong="H0236" into the province|strong="H4083" of Judea|strong="H3061", to the house|strong="H1005" of the great|strong="H7229" God|strong="H0426", which is builded|strong="H1124" with great|strong="H1560" stones|strong="H0069", and timber|strong="H0636" is laid|strong="H7761" in the walls|strong="H3797", and this|strong="H1791" work|strong="H5673" goeth|strong="H5648" fast|strong="H0629" on, and prospereth|strong="H6744" in their hands|strong="H3028".
9 Then|strong="H0116" asked|strong="H7593" we those|strong="H0479" elders|strong="H7868", and said|strong="H0560" unto them thus|strong="H3660", Who|strong="H4479" commanded|strong="H7761" you to build|strong="H1124" this|strong="H1836" house|strong="H1005", and to make up|strong="H3635" these|strong="H1836" walls|strong="H0846"?
10 We asked|strong="H7593" their names|strong="H8036" also|strong="H0638", to certify|strong="H3046" thee, that we might write|strong="H3790" the names|strong="H8036" of the men|strong="H1400" that were the chief|strong="H7217" of them.
11 And thus|strong="H3660" they returned|strong="H8421" us answer|strong="H6600", saying|strong="H0560", We|strong="H0586" are|strong="H1994" the servants|strong="H5649" of the God|strong="H0426" of heaven|strong="H8065" and earth|strong="H0772", and build|strong="H1124" the house|strong="H1005" that was|strong="H1934" builded|strong="H1124" these|strong="H1836" many|strong="H7690" years|strong="H8140" ago|strong="H6928", which a great|strong="H7229" king|strong="H4430" of Israel|strong="H3479" builded|strong="H1124" and set up|strong="H3635".
12 But|strong="H3861" after|strong="H4481" that our fathers|strong="H0002" had provoked|strong="H7265" the God|strong="H0426" of heaven|strong="H8065" unto wrath|strong="H7265", he gave|strong="H3052" them|strong="H1994" into the hand|strong="H3028" of Nebuchadnezzar|strong="H5020" the king|strong="H4430" of Babylon|strong="H0895", the Chaldean|strong="H3679", who destroyed|strong="H5642" this|strong="H1836" house|strong="H1005", and carried|strong="H1541" the people|strong="H5972" away|strong="H1541" into Babylon|strong="H0895".
13 But|strong="H1297" in the first|strong="H2298" year|strong="H8140" of Cyrus|strong="H3567" the king|strong="H4430" of Babylon|strong="H0895" the same king|strong="H4430" Cyrus|strong="H3567" made|strong="H7761" a decree|strong="H2942" to build|strong="H1124" this|strong="H1836" house|strong="H1005" of God|strong="H0426".
14 And the vessels|strong="H3984" also|strong="H0638" of|strong="H1768" gold|strong="H1722" and silver|strong="H3702" of the house|strong="H1005" of God|strong="H0426", which Nebuchadnezzar|strong="H5020" took|strong="H5312" out of|strong="H4481" the temple|strong="H1965" that was in Jerusalem|strong="H3390", and brought|strong="H2987" them into the temple|strong="H1965" of Babylon|strong="H0895", those|strong="H1994" did Cyrus|strong="H3567" the king|strong="H4430" take|strong="H5312" out of|strong="H4481" the temple|strong="H1965" of Babylon|strong="H0895", and they were delivered|strong="H3052" unto one, whose name|strong="H8036" was Sheshbazzar|strong="H8340", whom he had made|strong="H7761" governor|strong="H6347";
15 And said|strong="H0560" unto him, Take|strong="H5376" these|strong="H0412" vessels|strong="H3984", go|strong="H0236", carry|strong="H5182" them|strong="H1994" into the temple|strong="H1965" that is in Jerusalem|strong="H3390", and let the house|strong="H1005" of God|strong="H0426" be builded|strong="H1124" in|strong="H5922" his place|strong="H0870".
16 Then|strong="H0116" came|strong="H0858" the same|strong="H1791" Sheshbazzar|strong="H8340", and laid|strong="H3052" the foundation|strong="H0787" of the house|strong="H1005" of God|strong="H0426" which is in Jerusalem|strong="H3390": and since|strong="H4481" that time|strong="H0116" even until|strong="H5705" now|strong="H3705" hath it been in building|strong="H1124", and yet it is not|strong="H3809" finished|strong="H8000".
17 Now|strong="H3705" therefore, if|strong="H2006" it seem good|strong="H2869" to|strong="H5922" the king|strong="H4430", let there be search|strong="H1240" made in the king’s|strong="H4430" treasure|strong="H1596" house|strong="H1005", which is there|strong="H8536" at Babylon|strong="H0895", whether|strong="H2006" it be|strong="H0383" so, that a decree|strong="H2942" was made|strong="H7761" of|strong="H4481" Cyrus|strong="H3567" the king|strong="H4430" to build|strong="H1124" this|strong="H1791" house|strong="H1005" of God|strong="H0426" at Jerusalem|strong="H3390", and let the king|strong="H4430" send|strong="H7972" his pleasure|strong="H7470" to us concerning|strong="H5922" this matter|strong="H1836".
